Disney Talking with Amazon to Partner in ESPN Streaming Service? Really?

 by Ray Keating

Analysis/Commentary

DisneyBizJournal.com

August 25, 2023

Remember Borders? I loved that bookstore. But alas, Borders shut its doors in 2011.

Why am I bringing up a long-closed bookstore? Well, Borders was in trouble a decade before it shut down. In 2001, Borders struck a deal with Amazon.com for Amazon to run its website. That’s right, Borders handed over its online operations to its top rival, who also happened to be the company leading the charge in transforming how books were bought and read.

Borders’ ill-fated decision in 2001 – which was reversed in 2007 but by then it was too late – popped into my head when I read reports (with The Information having the original report) that Disney was in preliminary negotiations with Amazon as a potential streaming partner for ESPN.

Wait… Didn’t Disney launch the Disney+ streaming service to great praise in November 2019? And earlier in 2019, Disney gained operational control of Hulu. And didn’t Disney launch ESPN+ in 2018?

Given all of this, isn’t Disney supposed to be a streaming powerhouse? And how many times has CEO Bob Iger said that Disney loves live sports?

Yes, there’s been talk about Disney seeking a strategic partner for a full streaming version of ESPN, that is, offering full ESPN content. Iger confirmed that in a CNBC interview, without offering specifics. MLB, the NBA, and the NFL have been mentioned, with rumors including a partner taking a minority stake in the ESPN full streaming venture. There’s a logic when talking about partnering with those leagues.

But Amazon runs the Prime Video streaming service. And isn’t that a major competitor with Disney’s streaming services? One report said, “Amazon Prime Video has 117 million subscribers worldwide in 2023 and is expected to surpass 250 million in 2027.” The most recent tally of Disney+ subscribers stood at 146 million.

Hmmm.

A SeekingAlpha.com story put forth the following regarding Amazon possibly taking a share of ESPN, and being involved with setting up and running the new ESPN streaming service: “That’s a move that would not only clear up ESPN's future path somewhat but also signal a change in sports’ competitive dynamics, with Amazon making increasing moves into sports streaming itself.”

Um. I’m not sure this would clear up anything regarding ESPN streaming. And am I the only one getting a little Borders-Amazon vibe here regarding Disney getting in bed with Amazon for its ESPN streaming?

Clearing things up? Hardly. Raising more questions? Definitely.

EPCOT Food & Wine Festival Offers Months of Interesting Dining

by Beth Keating and Ray Keating

(Photos by Jonathan Keating)

Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

August 23, 2023

The EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival is one of Disney’s longest festivals, with the greatest number of food booths. There are nearly three dozen booths to choose from this year, with some new ones opening on September 22. Multiply that by 3 or 4 dishes per booth, and you have… a lot of food to try! But we’re up to the challenge.

That being said, it does take more than one visit to get the most out of all these dining opportunities. No matter how much training one might have in eating large amounts of food around the Disney parks and resorts, it’s just too much food to enjoy in one day.

Because we’re big Muppet fans, we had to head to the Odyssey building first to hit up the Brew-Wing Lab at the Odyssey, home during this festival to the Muppets Lab hosted by Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his erstwhile assistant Beaker.  (Thank you, Disney, for giving us more Muppets!)

The combination of Florida heat and humidity, and a long day meant that we opted not to try the Muppets’ “Unnecessarily Spicy, Yet Extremely Tasty Scotch Bonnet Pepper-Curry Wings with Cool Cucumber Yogurt,” as we heard that they are, well, unnecessarily spicy. The expected heat of the wings just didn’t seem ideal with the heat of the day. So, those wings will wait for another day.

However, we did pick the “Peanut Butter and Jelly Sticky Wings” and the “Garlic-Parmesan Wings.”  The PB&J wings were … well … a bit weird, at first. It was a little disconcerting at first bite, with the overwhelming flavor being that of the warm peanut butter rather than chicken.   There were six nice-sized wings in the order, and the flavor did grow on us after getting past the initially unexpected taste. We eventually decided that the PB&J wings were good… we think.

The Garlic-Parmesan wings, on the other hand, were excellent.  They, too, had a set of six, and struck a just-right balance between the garlic and the parmesan.  They weren’t too garlicky, and the creamy coating brought solid parmesan flavor to the wings.

Again, since it was a blazing hot day in Florida (more than the usual Florida sunshine), we also ordered up a cold drink to go with our wings – and no, we didn’t go for the non-alcoholic pickle milkshake that everyone else seemed to be buzzing about. We’d heard from a few guests that it tasted a bit like a McDonald’s shamrock shake, and since none of the day’s diners were overly fond of that springtime cult favorite, we chose the non-alcoholic “Frozen Fusion” instead.  Made with Twinings Pomegranate and Raspberry Herbal Tea, the drink is also fused with orange ice cream “molecules.”  It was perfect for a 100°plus day.  Strong pomegranate and raspberry flavors were frosty and thick, and the orange “molecules” on top were tasty little surprises.

Since we were already on the left side of the World Showcase after leaving the Odyssey, we headed next to the China Pavilion, always one of our favorites during a festival because we like to grab a bubble tea on our journey.  Today, though, we chose the new “Crispy Duck Bao Bun with Hoisin Sauce.” It was a good combination flavor-wise, but the first bite of duck was a bit chewier than expected.  Perhaps the bun had been too close to the heat lamps. Later bites were not as chewy.  The bao bun itself was nicely “pillow-y,” fluffy and light.  The accompanying sauce was sweet, adding to an overall enjoyable dish.

We had sorted through the Global Marketplace menus at home to try to narrow down our food hunt before we arrived, and were especially looking forward to the Australia booth for some out of the ordinary samples.  Unfortunately, our main reason for coming to this booth, the “Roasted Lamb Chop with Mint Pesto and Potato Crunchies,” was uneven.  We weren’t crazy about the seasoning on the lamb, and the meat wasn’t nearly as tender as it should have been.  On the other hand, the “Sweet-and-Spicy Bush Berry Shrimp with Pepper, Onion, Snap Peas and Sweet Chili Sauce” was delicious.  Definitely both sweet and spicy (as advertised!), and though the shrimp were just average-sized, the dish was a standout.

Next up was the Japan booth, where we again sampled a delightful bun.  The returning  “Teriyaki Chicken Bun” was a sizeable treat, with a pillow-soft steamed bun filled with a sweet chicken and vegetable combination.  Our second choice at this booth was the new offering, the “Fire Taiko Roll,” a sushi roll with spicy tuna in a spicy sauce. And it was indeed spicy, at least by Disney-spice standards, but not unbearably so.  The sushi was fresh, and you could taste the cucumber, pickled Daikon radish and tuna as separate, crisp flavors.

We had intended to try a few more dishes on this particular evening, but the outdoor heat was so overwhelming that we just weren’t hungry enough to stuff ourselves.  We made a final stop at the Ireland booth for an icy cold and very welcome “Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale.”  The light brew was cool and creamy, and made walking around the park a bit more tolerable.

The EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival runs through November 18, 2023, and yes, we’ll be back … numerous times. After all, this is our kind of challenge.

Unusual Breakfast at Steakhouse 71 is “Culinary Genius”

by Beth Keating and Ray Keating

Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

August 16, 2023

We’ve been to Steakhouse 71 at Disney World’s Contemporary Resort before. In fact, we were there just after they opened post-renovations from the former “The Wave… Of Contemporary American Flavors.” As the hot new restaurant debuting in town, we couldn’t get anywhere near dinner reservations at the time. We could, however, get early morning breakfast reservations, so we decided to give it a try.

And we liked it. (Check out the DisneyBizJournal review here.) But despite that fact, we still hadn’t returned for breakfast since that original visit. We have hit up the Steakhouse 71 Lounge a few times for the best-burger-at-Disney-World Stack Burger, however. (See DisneyBizJournal’s take on Disney World lounges here.)  This week, we decided to give the spot another go for the early morning hours, and oddly, still didn’t really end up with “breakfast foods.”

It was in the 8:00 a.m. hour, eyes barely open, when we were seated at the table in this modern-spin-on-mid-century décor dining room. But rather than the more typical eggs, pancakes, oatmeal or fruit plate offered on the menu at Steakhouse 71 (okay, there was espresso involved… we aren’t complete savages), we opted for the Florida Eggs Benedict ($19.00).  While that sounds breakfast-y, it was actually a crab-cake-based dish.

Yes, I said crab cake. For breakfast.  You know, that savory, seafood delight that one usually scarfs up for dinner?  And it was AWESOME!  What a way to start the day!

The entrée included two-poached eggs atop a crab cake with Hollandaise sauce, all perched on Canadian bacon and a toasted English muffin.  A scoop of breakfast potatoes added a few more carbs to fuel the day. It was, as Shawn and Gus have proclaimed on Psych, one of our all-time favorite TV shows, “a flavor seizure.”

The crab cakes were of ample size (always a question when it comes to crab cakes), and the crab wasn’t minced, but instead offered in plump pieces. The breading on the cakes nicely served the crab, rather than dominating it. All of that would have been enough, but combining the crab cakes with poached eggs (done perfectly), Canadian bacon, and on an English muffin turned out to be culinary genius. Yes, this is a highly recommended breakfast.

Steakhouse 71 serves breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Then they reopen for dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.   (If you don’t feel the need for dining table space, you can squeeze in a visit to the even more casual Steakhouse 71 Lounge, which stays open from noon straight through until 11:00 p.m.)

Named for the year Disney’s Contemporary Resort first opened, you enter Steakhouse 71 through a long hallway adorned with black and white photos of the construction of Walt Disney World, setting the stage for this tribute to Walt and to the park’s founding.  Many of the dishes at Steakhouse 71 are inspired by some of Walt’s (and Lillian’s) favorites, including Walt’s Prime Rib Hash ($18.00), also available for breakfast.  Seasonal pancakes ($15.00), omelets ($17.00), and a unique take on avocado toast ($13.00), served on a toasted sourdough bread with onion jam, are some of the other selections up for grabs.

If you are heading to the Magic Kingdom, you may discover that Steakhouse 71 is a great way to start your visit with Mickey, whether you make breakfast a sweet, or even a savory, choice. It’s just a quick monorail ride away. And don’t pass up the crab cakes when beginning your day.

EPCOT’S Shiki-Sai Opens Early!

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

August 15, 2023

Calling all sushi fans… your wish has been granted.  Shiki-Sai: Sushi Izakaya, the new sushi bar and grill in EPCOT’s Japan pavilion, has opened early!  (How often does that happen at Disney?)

Courtesy of Disney World website

Sushi, sashimi, Izakaya classics, grilled dishes, noodles, and sake and other cocktails will be featured at this much anticipated table-service spot, with great views of the World Showcase Lagoon. (Will this become a favorite spot to view the nighttime spectaculars?)  Shiki-Sai will also showcase the chance to see fresh sushi being made behind the counter in the restaurant, with selections rotating with the flavors of each season.

Originally scheduled to open August 30, 2023, the remodeled restaurant on the second floor of the Japan pavilion quietly opened today (August 15) for walk-up guests.  The venue appears to be taking only walk-up diners until August 28, when advanced dining reservations are popping up on the My Disney Experience (MDE) app.  In fact, as of this writing, the Disney website and the MDE app are still listing the restaurant as “Opening Soon.”  Shiki-Sai will be serving from 12 noon until 9:00 p.m., at least for the current calendar schedule.

The new menu has been posted online, dishing up everything from $7.00 Avocado rolls; $16.00 Spicy Tuna rolls; and $28.00 Dragon rolls; to a $300 Chef Special “Boat Presentation” Fune serving 4-6 guests with a premium selection of sushi and sashimi. Tempura, okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes), skewers and more round out the restaurant’s offerings. Shiki-Sai will be serving some interesting options for the pint-sized travelers in your group as well, including kids’ bento boxes ($20.00) and the Temaki Sushi Set ($18.00), a “create your own” hand-rolled sushi.

Disney says, “Create unforgettable memories inspired by the spirit of Japan’s vibrant seasonal festivals. A cultural representative from Japan will guide you through each unique festival experience, one bite at a time. You'll participate in Tanabata festivities during the summer, savor moon-viewing dumplings in the autumn, and so much more.”

Since this restaurant is inside of EPCOT (in the former Tokyo Dining spot), you will need valid EPCOT park admission (and potentially park reservations, depending on your dates and times) to get to your meal.

If you are a sushi fan, head to the My Disney Experience quickly to grab a dining reservation at this sure-to-be-popular location, and be among the first to try it out before everyone else realizes it’s opened early!

2023 ESPN Events Invitational Announces Team Matchups for Thanksgiving Men’s College Basketball Tournament at Disney

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

August 12, 2023

Most visitors to Disney World never step foot on the sprawling facility known as the “ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.” Well, basketball fans will have a reason to do so this Thanksgiving.

Despite the many fields and amenities located at the complex, unless your team is down in Orlando participating in league play or a competition such as cheerleading, softball, soccer, or dance, you likely haven’t even driven past the gates. Many guests don’t know the place exists. Yet there are 11 baseball and softball diamonds, 17 outdoor fields, and more than 700,000 square feet of playing space, and even a few dining options.

Courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

But if you are a basketball fan, or just want to check out the offerings at the ESPN complex, this may be your chance. First round matchups have been announced for the 2023 ESPN Events Invitational, and the showdowns will be taking place November 23-26, 2023, at the ESPN Complex at Disney World.  So, if you’ll be in the Orlando area and are craving a little basketball with your Thanksgiving meal, tickets are on sale now through ESPNEvents.com, and you can join your fellow sports-fans at the 5,000-seat State Farm Field House Thanksgiving weekend.

This year features four games on Thanksgiving Day: Penn State vs Texas A&M; Florida Atlantic vs Butler; Iowa State vs Virginia Commonwealth; and Boise State vs Virginia Tech. (Disney has pointed out that “six of the teams in this year’s field played in the 2023 NCAA Tournament including FAU which made it all the way to the Final Four for the first time in the school’s history.”)

The Thanksgiving winners will move on to the semifinals the following day, Friday, November  24, with the championship game taking place Sunday, November 26.

Available tickets include both single-session tickets and all-tournament tickets. which get you into every game. Fans who purchase “Early Bird” all-tournament tickets by September 8 will receive a $15 discount. Additional single-session tickets will go on sale on October 2.

The Apple-Disney Fantasy

 by Ray Keating

Analysis/Commentary

DisneyBizJournal.com

August 10, 2023

Wall Street is an industry awash in often wild rumors. Hollywood also is a sector saturated by gossip. So, no one should be surprised when speculation verges on fantasy about publicly traded companies operating in Hollywood.

Just consider the ongoing rumors that Apple could buy Disney.

The Hollywood Reporter weighed in on this in an August 9 article. It was noted that…

“…a veteran Hollywood executive mused to The Hollywood Reporter on the possibility of a deal that would rock the industry: Apple buying Disney. It’s an idea that keeps being discussed, even though many top executives have scoffed at it and many still do. Apple doesn’t want to buy a studio, they say, and there’s no way the feds would allow a huge deal like that to go through.” (Emphasis added.)

Nonetheless, the position of the authors and publishers of this piece, and many others, seems to be the following: Hey, don’t let any of these realities get in the way of speculating in an undisciplined manner.

Here’s one of my favorite parts of this Reporter piece: “There clearly is no buyer like Apple, which is sitting on $62 billion in cash and cash equivalents and has a $2.8 trillion market cap. And while it may be very true that Apple doesn’t want to buy a studio, maybe it would want to buy this studio – the one that, despite the challenges of the moment, has a vault full of priceless IP and remains the most valuable brand in entertainment.”

Um. Okay. So, Apple, which is mainly a phone and computer hardware/software company, has a lot of money and its own streaming service, but isn’t interested in purchasing a studio; nonetheless, it’s somehow a likely acquirer of a company that is a movie/television/streaming studio and an operator of the largest and most successful theme parks on the planet? Does this make any sense? Hmmm.

The Reporter pointed to where many of these rumors might have begun. In his 2019 memoir, The Ride of a Lifetime, Disney CEO Bob Iger wrote about his friendship with Steve Jobs, and asserted, “I believe that if Steve were still alive, we would have combined our companies, or at least discussed the possibility very seriously.” That comment was based on a relationship – both personal and business – specific to Iger and the late Jobs.

On yesterday’s Disney earnings call, Iger was asked about the possibility of Disney being bought in total, specifically by a tech company. While saying that he didn’t want to get into future possibilities for the company, Iger’s response was pretty clear. He mentioned the international regulatory climate (read between the lines: it wouldn’t be friendly to such a deal), and pointed out that this is “not something we obsess about.”

Again, this Apple-buys-Disney idea is far more about fantasy, than reality.
