Disney Gearing Up for the 2024 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 18, 2024

The EPCOT Festival of the Arts has just begun, and a good portion of the country is still in a deep freeze. Despite the weather, Disney is rolling ahead with planning for the 2024 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival, bringing back the gorgeously designed landscapes, the walk-through Butterfly Landing, and beautiful garden-inspired dishes at the Outdoor Kitchens. The festival begins on February 28, 2024, a mere 9 days after the Festival of the Arts ends on February 19.

In a move that took many guests off-guard, however, this year’s festival is shorter than usual, and will only run through May 27, 2024, leaving some guests disappointed that the trips they’d already booked will not overlap with the new festival dates.

If you are hoping to attend one of the Flower & Garden Festival’s “Garden Rocks” concerts at either 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. or 8:00 p.m., Disney has released a sneak peek at some of the new names that will be on stage this year. (The full schedule of artists isn’t completed yet, but you can get updates here.)  The Garden Rocks Dining Packages open February 6, so you’ll be able to book a table and reserve a seat to see your favorites very soon.

This year, “Garden Rocks” will feature a number of groups who are new to the festival, including Modern English, Crowder, Lit, and Monsieur Perine. Disney also announced that, “For the first time, Raul Acosta & Oro Solido will share the stage with Magic Juan, then return the next day with Luisito Ayala and The Puerto Rican Power Band in a series of unforgettable performances.”

Among the scheduled performers (subject to change) are:

• Vybe (February 28 and 29)

• Jason Scheff (March 1 and 2)

• Richard Marx (March 3 and 4)

• Evolution Motown (March 5, 6 and 7)

• Berlin (March 8 and 9)

• Rick Springfield (March 10 and 11)

• Dian Diaz (March 12, 13 and 14)

• Modern English (March 15 and 16) NEW

• Commodores (March 17 and 18)

• Foreigners Journey (March 19, 20 and 21)

• Lit (May 24 and 25) NEW

While seating at the concerts is free to EPCOT guests, Dining Packages guarantee you a place in the theatre before the standby lines are admitted.  During this festival, Dining Packages will be available at seven EPCOT restaurants, including:

• Akershus Royal Banquet Hall

• Biergarten Restaurant

• Coral Reef Restaurant

• Garden Grill Restaurant

• Rose & Crown Dining Room

• Le Cellier Steakhouse

• Regal Eagle Smokehouse: Craft Brews & Barbecue (same-day, in-person walk-up packages only)

Note that at this publishing, Disney is still listing Spice Road Table as one of the locations for the Dining Packages on its website, but did not list it among the seven dining spots in this week’s announcements. We’ll see what happens on February 6, when Dining Package reservations go live.  For more information, including pricing and availability, visit the Dining Packages page at DisneyWorld.com.

A few new topiaries will be taking root among the more than 70 topiaries at this year’s festival, including Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot, who will make his appearance near Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in World Discovery.  Miguel and Dante from Disney Pixar’s Coco will show up in the Mexico pavilion, and you’ll be able to find Figment in the new World Celebration Gardens. Asha, Valentino and the Wishing Star from the animated film Wish will pop up at the park’s main entrance.

The festival scavenger hunts will be returning this year as well, with two seasonal scavenger hunts. Spike the Bee’s “Pollination Exploration” will kick off the festival, but later on, you’ll also be able to partake in the “Egg-stravaganza Hunt,” finding twelve bunny-inspired eggs throughout the park. Both scavenger hunt maps will be available for purchase at multiple locations while supplies last, and when you find all the hidden surprises, you can turn in your map for a special reward.

Families traveling with little ones might want to set aside some extra time for the camp-themed garden where kids can play, climb and explore at the “Camp Get Out N’ Play Garden.”

If you are living in one of the states experiencing the below zero temps right now, we are so sorry for you. Hang in there… maybe some photos and inspiration from the Flower and Garden Festival will give you something to look forward to while you wait for things to thaw out.

Take Time To Visit Animation Academy at the 2024 EPCOT Festival of the Arts, Even If You Aren’t An Artist

 by Beth Keating

Review/Park Visit

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 17, 2024

EPCOT’s International Festival of the Arts is perhaps our family’s favorite festival, and we always consider it way too short to cram in all the fun.  A mere five weeks long, there’s hardly enough time to make sure you participate in all the cool interactive offerings, from helping to create a larger than life paint-by-numbers mural that changes throughout the festival, to meeting and greeting with your favorite Disney artists, purchasing some new artwork for your home, designing chalk drawings, and chowing down on the creative entries at the Food Studios.

We also make sure to see at least a few of the shows during the “Disney on Broadway Concert Series,” enjoying a rotating cast of Broadway stars bringing the best of Disney’s Broadway music to Florida.  We’ve seen some superb performances in the America Gardens Theatre, and with the actual cast members from the Broadway shows performing the songs they’ve been known for, you’re guaranteed a Broadway-caliber performance each evening as part of your EPCOT visit.

There is, however, a lesser-known performance taking place each day in the America Gardens Theatre.  At 12:30 and 1:30 each day, a working Disney animation artist gives a free class on drawing one of guests’ favorite Disney characters.  “Animation Academy” is a fifty minute (give or take, since it’s live) class that takes you step-by-step through the process of drawing your very own Disney friend to take home.

At the entrance to the theatre, you are handed a clipboard with sketch paper and a pencil, and you’ll settle in for your instructions.  The stage and cameras are set up so that the overhead screen gives you an up-close, detailed view of exactly what moves your instructor is making on the page, while they are talking you through the drawing.

I am art challenged, so even my stick-figures look…pathetic.  So, why bother carving out an hour of your EPCOT day to participate in a drawing workshop, especially if you aren’t a budding animator?  Easy, because while you are enjoying the fun/torment of trying to bring a Disney character to life on your sketch paper, you are also learning a lot about why the Disney animation artists make certain decisions about the characters they are working on, and you also get to hear fun stories about the behind-the-scenes things that take place during the creative process.

On the day I attended, our instructor had us work on Figment, a fitting selection since he is the mascot of the festival, but your character of the day may differ.  Our instructor had, among other things, worked on The Lion King, and more recently, was involved in creating the 50th anniversary statues throughout the parks, so to say he was familiar with the nuances of a lot of characters would be an understatement!

The pace of the class was just slow enough for those of us who weren’t trained artists to keep up, without boring the future animators in the audience.  A few minutes at the end of the session provided time for questions from the audience as well.

Your artwork may not qualify for a future academy award, but at the least, you’ll come home with a really cool (and free!) souvenir, and some interesting stories about your favorite Disney friends.

The EPCOT International Festival of the Arts runs through February 19, 2024.

Highs and Lows of Opening Day of the 2024 EPCOT Festival of the Arts

 by Beth Keating

Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 16, 2024

I broke one of my cardinal rules of Disney fandom this week – Never, ever go to the opening day of an EPCOT Festival.

The crowds swell to astronomical levels, lines at food booths are numbingly long, and every third guest is running around with a camera and microphone.  I’d rather just wait a few days and go after the first weekend is over.  By Monday, the craziness dies down, and you’ve got a comfortable stroll through a far-less-crowded park, and your choice of plates at the food booths can be measured in moments instead of hourly increments.

But…. Figment popcorn bucket.

And I weighed my need for that popcorn bucket against the self-preservation need of avoiding opening day of the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts.  Figment won, because I was afraid that his pavilion bucket would sell out the first day and I’d be out of luck. So, off we went to opening day, arriving shortly after rope drop, mobile ordering Figgy’s house, and gathering up my chunk of pristine plastic about 25 minutes after checking in.

The process for acquiring this year’s souvenir popcorn bucket ($30.00) was remarkably smooth, especially for the opening hour of the festival, and the cast members had the situation well in hand. You’ll mobile order on the My Disney Experience app, select a pickup time, and pay right on the app. When you get the notification that your bucket is ready for pickup, you’ll check in at Figment’s Inspiration Station at the Odyssey building, and pick up Figment and his pavilion at a station inside. Once our notification popped up on our phone, it was less than five minutes to stroll through the pickup line and sling a popcorn bucket over a shoulder.

That was the high point of the day. The rest of the day was a slow, downhill slide.  The weather on opening day was miserable, on and off rain throughout the day, and went from cooler than normal for Florida in the morning, to muggy and humid later in the afternoon.

The line for coffee? An almost 30 minute wait…for a black, iced coffee from a kiosk (not even the Starbucks’ counter.) We managed one Food Studio that day, waiting 25 minutes for two plates, that were not especially “hot” by the time we’d walked to a miraculously open table.  We’d originally circled six prospective booths that were of interest, but for us, opening day was “one and done.”  We made plans to return a different day when the food lines would be less daunting.

The one Food Studio we did visit on opening day was “Cuisine Classique” (located in World Discovery near the Test Track side of the Creations Shop).  There, we ordered both of the selections, the Beef Wellington, and the mussels.

The Beef Wellington ($8.75) was the better of the two dishes, though not as good as in previous years.  The Red Wine Demi-Glace was phenomenal – if only I could replicate that at home!  Dark and a touch salty (in a good way), it turned out to be the thing that elevated the dish as a whole.  Served with Mushroom Duxelles, Prosciutto and Puff Pastry, the beef was just okay, a bit on the chewy side for Beef Wellington.  The Wellington itself was made as one larger piece in the booth, and then sliced into thinner serving portions just before being plated. Unfortunately, the sliced sections weren’t sliced thick enough to maintain their shape very well, and we ended up smushing the various components together on our forks in order to get the flavors the way they were meant to be served.  On the plus side, dipping the bite into the demi-glace was heavenly. The accompanying perfectly mashed potatoes were also excellent, dished up with the tiniest of miniature carrots and miniscule baby radishes. We’d have enjoyed a few more forkfuls of their fluffiness.

The second option, the “Cast Iron-Roasted P.E.I. Mussels with Sautéed Tomatoes, Garlic and Fresh Herbs” ($8.00) was a bit on the disappointing side.  While served with a decent number of mussels and two (Figment-wing shaped?) toasts, the ten or twelve shellfish were somewhat difficult to pop out of their shells with a plastic fork, so just a fair warning if you are dining atop a trash can, festival-style.  We really had to work to get a few of them detached.  Flavor-wise, the vegetable component had a nice touch of background heat, but the broth wasn’t really a “broth” in the typical sense.  Ours had a pretty thick layer of oil floating on top as we dug through the mussels.  While some diners seemed to be reveling in their seafood, as folks who grew up on Long Island with gigantic bowls of mussels at our fingertips, this rendition didn’t wow us, and we’d say skip it for other more satisfying offerings elsewhere.

We were planning a stop at the “Artist’s Table” in the American Pavilion for the Duck and Dumplings, and “Goshiki” for the Sushi Donut and Wagyu Bun in Japan, but those lines were double the length of the line we’d been in earlier in the day at Cuisine Classique, and we decided to pack it in, and come back to eat another day.

By mid-afternoon, there were even lines to view the artwork in the artists’ tents, not to mention secondary lines to purchase items, and then even more lines to meet the visiting artists and get their signatures.  Time to head for the trams…

The EPCOT International Festival of the Arts runs through February 19, 2024.

Hollywood Studios Rustles Up Menu Changes at Roundup Rodeo BBQ

 by Beth Keating

News/Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 12, 2024

We are 2 for 4 in our family regarding the latest changes at Roundup Rodeo BBQ at Hollywood Studios. Sadly, two of our favorite sides have been eliminated from the menu.

While it’s not unusual for new eateries to change up their menus during their first year after they see what is connecting with their diners and what’s not, Roundup Rodeo is, in essence, changing the way their dining experience is presented. Previously, diners could choose 4 of 8 available side dish selections, served family style, so you had to negotiate with your tablemates to decide which of the dishes looked the most enticing. Now, the cast members automatically bring you the new selections, no choices to be made.

We’ve dined at the restaurant, which opened in Toy Story Land in March 2023, three or four times this year in various combinations of family members. We even chose it for one of our meals for a family reunion earlier this fall because the theming (and food choices) would cover a pretty wide range of needs from a 2-year old all the way to a 76-year old. Plus, the immersive décor in the restaurant is so much fun, shrinking yourself down to toy size in the brightly colored room designed by Andy himself, and so very “Disney” for the out-of-town guests in our group. There are tons of Toy Story Easter eggs to find in the room.

You can catch our initial review of the restaurant from its opening here, with a more detailed look at the menu.  While there were some hits and misses, we were generally pleased with most of the food, and the service was upbeat, the banter amusing, and the staff operated at warp-speed.

While Rex’s Romaine and Kale Salad has been taken off the “Get a Wiggle on your Greens!” selections, our favorite greens selection still remains. Wheezy’s Watermelon Salad was some of the best and sweetest watermelon we’ve had, and it holds its place along with the Rootin’ Tootin’ Tomato Salad. You’ll get both of those options brought to your table.

Removed from the sides menu, however, were:

  • The Married Spuds: Loaded potato barrels drizzled with green goddess dressing, cheese sauce, and seasoned BBQ spices
  • Force Field Fried Pickles: Jumbo pickle spears coated with a dill-flavored breading
  • Mean Old Potato Salad: Homestyle with red-skinned potatoes
  • Campfire-roasted Vegetables: Roasted seasonal vegetables (plant-based)

Instead, the new menu options include plain Potato Barrels (replacing the more jazzed-up Married Spuds potato barrel option), along with the continuing selections of:

  • The Claw! Veggie Slaw (Plant-based)
  • Slinky Doooooooooog’s Mac & Cheese
  • Buckin’ Baked Beans (Plant-based)
  • Cowpoke Corn on the Cob (Grilled Street Corn)

You’ll get all five sides brought to your table, so you’ll be gaining an extra side in exchange for not having the choices to make.

For our family, The Married Spuds and the Force Field Fried Pickles were big favorites, and we’re sad to see them ride off into the sunset.  On the new rotation, we have also been pretty happy with Slinky Doooooooooog’s Mac & Cheese, but as for the other sides, well, we could just as soon skip them.

So, with the new menu changes, will we be back to Roundup Rodeo?  Maybe.  The last time we dined there, our dining reservation was almost 45 minutes behind schedule, and the waiting area was jam packed.  While our server was cheerful and welcoming, the meal also felt far more rushed than our initial visits.  Entrées were being sent out to the table before most of our party had even shared the salads around the loop, and while we recognize the restaurant’s need to try and pick up the pace because the reservations were running so far behind schedule, there isn’t any extra real estate on the tables to have all those bowls present at the same time.  At one point, we tried to balance one platter on top of the other to make space, and our own plates were hanging partially off the edge of the table to make enough room to set the serving bowls down.  (If you’ve eaten at Roundup Rodeo, you’ll understand exactly what I mean!)

With a current price of $45 per adult and $25 per child (it’s a fixed price meal), you don’t want to race your way through the experience, especially with so much action happening around you with Partysaurus Rex hosting dance parties, freeze frames with Andy coming, and yard sales abounding.  It’s a fun restaurant to take the family to, and while we are disappointed that we’ve lost some of our favorite dishes on the menu, hopefully the menu reductions will mean better attention to quality for the other foods on the menu.  Reach for the sky, Roundup Rodeo! Make it happen.

Star Wars: Good News and Bad News

 by Ray Keating

News and Commentary

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 9, 2024

Well, there certainly has been a good deal of news flowing around Star Wars in recent days – both good news and bad news.

Since I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy, let’s start with the good news.

Disney announced today that the Mandalorian and Grogu will be featured in a movie to be directed by Jon Favreau. The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production this year. Favreau was quoted: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Favreau. Star Wars. The big screen. That’s good news.

Unfortunately, one does have to wonder about the timing of this announcement given the firestorm Disney has faced with revelations about the views of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who is slated to direct the next Star Wars movie focused on the Rey character.

Chinoy is a Pakistani-Canadian journalist and two-time Oscar-winning documentarian. And from what I can tell, she has confronted how women are mistreated in various Muslim nations. Good for her. She also directed a couple of episodes of the lightly-watched Disney+ Ms. Marvel series. That’s not so good. Without rehashing the full controversy here, comments that Chinoy made at a conference several years ago and recently on CNN (get more information here) point to her to being long on feminist ideology and activism, and rather short on discernment and balance. Her resume also appears quite brief and peculiar to be handed a major sci-fi/fantasy film in the massive and troubled Star Wars franchise. Unfortunately for her and for Disney, it’s hard to not see her Star Wars hiring as being based on ideology and/or a quota, as opposed to a track record that indicated she would be ideal for a Star Wars movie. As this controversy emerged, questions come to mind about Disney perhaps not doing their homework on this hire. Naturally, leftist commentators are trying to paint criticisms of Chinoy as being misogynistic, but these responses seem to amount to little more than ad hominem attacks.

Listen, I get it. These debates tend to degrade into ugliness, and often-questionable motivations are at work. But from a straight business standpoint, does it make sense to hand a major Star Wars film to a director who lacks experience, and seems to have a tough time keeping her views in check? It’s safe to say that I probably disagree with 90 percent of the political views espoused in Hollywood, but that doesn’t stop me from recognizing and appreciating good storytelling from people with whom I disagree. And if the Chinoy Star Wars film goes forward, I hope she makes a film that can be enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, many of her statements make me wonder if she can overcome her politics in order to make such a movie.

As a fan, I recognize that much of Star Wars is about hope. So, here’s hoping for the best. As a stockholder, however, I would appreciate serious decision-making about storytelling and customers that provide a more solid foundation for such hope.
