The Edison Offers Fun Classes to Learn While You Are “Sipping”

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 20, 2024

The Edison is one of our favorite restaurants in Disney Springs, and we’ve not only enjoyed the food, but we’ve also been there in the evening when a variety of entertainers have been giving great performances. The restaurant has a cabaret-style stage downstairs, and this old “power plant” themed restaurant offers a mash-up of steam-punk, gothic, Art Deco, and Industrial décor. The live music acts have always been spot on, whether it was one of the jazz ensembles or the more vintage nightclub vocalists.

In addition to being an entertaining place to eat, The Edison also offers a number of different opportunities to learn while you enjoy sipping on the unique beverages at this Roaring '20s -themed spot. Monthly workshops abound, but there are also some upcoming specialty events, too.

This week, The Edison is participating in “Sip, Savor & Stroll,” a chance to “drink, dine and dash your way with us from restaurant to restaurant,” stopping at three different Disney Springs eateries along the way.  The EdisonEnzo's Hideawayand Maria & Enzo's Ristorante will host traveling guests on March 21 with different curated food and drink pairings at each location.  Timed tickets, priced at $75 and starting after 4:30 p.m., will control the flow of the crowd, and guests will have a guide to lead them through the restaurant rotation. Diners first meet at The Edison, and then have a guide escort them to Enzo's Hideaway for the next pairing, before ending the stroll at Maria & Enzo's patio.

At The Edison, you’ll enjoy the “Sunny Disposition Porthole” and The Edison's sourdough grilled cheese and lemon-basil tomato soup shooter.  Stop two, Enzo’s Hideaway, will be serving an “Enzoni” (made with Ford's gin) and saffron arancini. Your final stop at Maria & Enzo’s will wrap up with a “Blood Orange Mule” and a sweet dessert cannoli. Space is limited, and open only to ages 21 and older.

In April,  “Whiskey & Wonder” is a chance to visit eight different whiskey stations in a walkaround format.  It takes place at 12:00 p.m. on April 13, 2024.  VIP tickets are $90, and VIP access gets guests in a half hour early at 11:30 a.m., with provided seating.  General Admission tickets for 12 p.m. are $75. An add-on Luxury Station will pop up your ticket price by an additional $40, but will feature Spherified Black Manhattan with A5 Waygu & Hokkaidō Scallops. There will also be demonstrations during the event.  Once again, space is limited, and open only to ages 21 and older.

Food and beverages pairings at “Whiskey & Wonder” include:

• Barrel-aged Boulevardier with Carnitas Tostadas

• Shaker Plane with Tuna Crudo

• Whiskey Smash French Press with Sugarcane Shrimp

• Single-malt American Whiskey with Clothesline Bacon Station

• Porthole with St. Louis Ribs

• Lynchburg Peach Lemonade with Biscuits & Country Ham

• Liquid Nitrogen Whiskey Ice Cream (dairy-free available) with Handmade Waffle Cone

• Nitro Irish Coffee Draft with Tiramisu Push Pop

The next fun (and educational!) event at The Edison is being offered on several different dates.  The restaurant’s Saturday “Shaken and Stirred: Cocktail Classes” will be presented on eight afternoons between March 23 and June 29, all starting at 1:00 p.m.  Classes are designed for both beginners and more experienced “mixologists,” and will help guests delve into the ingredients, recipes and techniques involved in crafting cocktails.  Class size is limited to ten guests at a time, so participants will get lots of hands-on experience. Tickets are $100 per guest, except for the “All Things Sazerac” class, which is $175.

Themes change for each class, and include:

• March 23:  Pre-Prohibition Era Cocktails

• April 6: Mixology 101: Building Off the Basics

• April 20: American Whiskeys: Bourbon, Rye and Single Malts

• May 4: The Great British Shake Off (U.K. Spirits & Cocktails)

• May 18: South of the Border (Central & South American Spirits & Cocktails)

• June 1: Amari, Vermouths and Aperitifs

• June 15: The Classics – Where Are They Now?

• June 29: All Things Sazerac

Tickets for the events are available online at The Edison’s website

2024 “Disney Legends” Inductees Announced

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 19, 2024

Every once in a while, when I look at the list of the hundreds of Disney Legends, I’m taken off guard by who is on — and not on — the list.  This is one of those years that you would’ve assumed some of these illustrious nominees had achieved this honor long before some of the newer celebrities and magic makers with shorter Disney resumes.

Disney has just announced the list of the 14 men and women who will be inducted into this year’s class of Disney Legends.  For those who don’t know what this honor is, becoming a “Disney Legend” is the equivalent of Disney’s Hall of Fame, and Burbank is their Cooperstown.  At the Disney headquarters, there are rows upon rows of plaques detailing the contributions these creatives have brought to the Disney company during its history.  The Legends program has been honoring Disney creatives for 37 years.

Disney explains, “The Disney Legends Award honors artists and visionaries throughout the company’s history who have pushed the envelope of creativity, challenged conventional wisdom, and broken the restraints of the status quo in search of new possibilities and excellence.”

The inductees will receive their awards at the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California (August 9-11, 2024).

Among those who should have been inducted eons ago is Harrison Ford.  Why wasn’t Indy brought in before this, considering the enormity of the body of work that he’s brought to Disney?  (By the way, many of Han Solo’s Star Wars cohorts, including  Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and George Lucas, are already Legends.) James Cameron got an entire Pandora land gifted to him at Disney before becoming a Legend, all movie-making skills aside.  And Joe Rohde?  Lordy, he is probably the most influential creative force behind Animal Kingdom, not to mention his  myriad other accomplishments as a Disney Imagineer.  (OK, we’ll overlook the whole “Disco Yeti” thing.) He’s the reason guests enjoyed The Adventurers Club at Pleasure Island for so many years, and still mourn its demise.  Frank Oz gave voice to Yoda, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and a host of other Disney characters…. How was he not inducted years ago? John Williams?  Disney itself says, “The unforgettable music of John Williams is the soundtrack of our lives.”  What more needs to be said to that?  The man created the music for more than 100 movies, including the Star Wars films and the Indiana Jones franchise, and has five Academy Awards to his name. Disney even lauds him as the “Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most-nominated person in the history of the Oscars, a number second only to Walt Disney.”

A hearty congratulations to each of them, for achieving what fans have celebrated all along – the amazing depth of creativity that this year’s class brought to the world. What took the Legends committee so long to catch up with the rest of us?

If you’d like to see a more detailed biography of this year’s honorees, you can go to Disney’s media website.

The complete list of 2024 honorees includes:

• Colleen Atwood (costume designer)

•  Angela Bassett (actress)

• Martha Blanding (Parks & Resorts/cast member)

• James L. Brooks (producer/director)

• James Cameron (filmmaker/director)

• Jamie Lee Curtis (actress)

• Miley Cyrus (singer)

• Steve Ditko (comic book artist/writer)

• Harrison Ford (actor)

• Mark Henn (animator)

• Frank Oz (director/Muppeteer)

• Kelly Ripa (actress/talk show host)

• Joe Rohde (Imagineer)

• John Williams (composer)

Ryan Seacrest will be hosting the Legends Ceremony at 5:00 p.m. on August 11, and it will take place at the Honda Center. The show always pays tribute to the honorees and their accomplishments, but there are typically additional performances and guest appearances as well.

Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, added, “To be named a Disney Legend is the highest honor our company can bestow on anyone, reserved for those whose talent and achievement have earned them an enduring place in our history. The fourteen individuals to be honored as Disney Legends this year have each made extraordinary creative contributions across the worlds of Disney and we look forward to celebrating them at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.”

Actor Fred MacMurray (The Shaggy Dog, The Absent-Minded Professor) was the first Disney personality to be given Disney Legend status in 1987. Since then, 318 recipients have placed their handprints in bronze in the Disney Legends Plaza, and received the two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends sculpture that “signifies the imagination, creativity, and magic they have brought to the company.”  Previous inductees have included Mark Hamill; Carrie Fisher; Robin Williams; Julie Andrews, Howard Ashman; Wayne Allwine; ; Robert Downey Jr.; Annette Funicello; Angela Lansbury;  George Lucas; Tony Baxter; Jim Henson; Steve Martin; Alan Menken; Jon Favreau; James Earl Jones; Stan Lee; Marty Sklar; Josh Gad;  Johnny Depp; Danny Elfman; Steve Jobs; Dick Van Dyke; Barbara Walters; Betty White; Bob Gurr; Rolly Crump; Yale Gracey; Lillian Disney; Roy E. Disney; X Atencio; Thurl Ravenscroft; the Sherman Brothers; John Hench; Marc Davis; and Tim Allen, among the more than 300.

Tickets to the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event go on sale March 23.  Details can be found at D23.

Happy St. Patty’s Day… Now Go Enjoy the Irish Cream Cheesecake at Disney!

 by Beth Keating

Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 15, 2024

Disney World has been home to a great many limited time treats over the past few weeks, between Women’s History Month specials, new Flower & Garden festival goodies, and springtime Easter delights.  We are quickly slipping past this week’s unique offerings, though, with a number of holiday indulgences about to expire.

With so many Instagram worthy, over-the-top Disney confections popping up around the parks, here's one dish that we almost bypassed, until three different cast members pointed it out with their recommendations.  Standing in the queue at the quick serve Gasparilla Island Grill at the Grand Floridian, we were refilling our drink mug after visiting the Easter egg displays when a cast member restocking the sweets counter drew our attention to a rather unassuming looking dish of cheesecake.  It would certainly get lost among the brightly colored cupcakes and cookies. As she was replenishing the trays, she looked up and said, “I know these look pretty simple, but they are sooo delicious. You should try one. Trust me!”

A second cast member walked by and acknowledged having sampled one the day before… and wholeheartedly agreed with the first cast member. Okay, I was sold.  If a cast member (or two) says they are good, I’ll take their word for it.

Then, I got to the cashier, who gushed, “Oh, you’re getting the Bailey’s cheesecake. That is sooo good.”  So, if you are counting, we’re now up to three votes of confidence, in a ten-foot walk from the counter to the cashier.  Pony up that cash, because I believe them!

The confection that the cast members were enthused about was the St. Patrick’s Day Irish Cream Cheesecake ($6.49).  A circle of goodness in a small tin, this dessert looked pretty enough, with its elegant Grand Floridian “GF” initials in green, with a decorative edging of gold sprinkle “coins” around the edges to jazz it up a little, but what was hidden underneath was even more worthy.

The dessert was Bailey’s Irish Cream cheesecake, topped with a thin layer of Chantilly cream. It was sweet and creamy, but light as air.  A graham cracker crust on the bottom had an extra dose of cinnamon, giving a counterbalance to the cheesecake.  The cheesecake was not quite as light as a whipped cheesecake, but certainly fluffier than a traditional New York style version.  Don’t let the “Bailey’s” ingredient scare you off.  It was just the subtlest hint of Bailey’s flavor in the cheesecake, not overwhelming at all.  It was enough, however, to give the treat some delicious background flavor without overpowering the cheesecake.

This was quite a heavenly afternoon pick-me-up, and if I were staying anywhere in the vicinity of the Grand Floridian between now and St. Patty’s Day, I’d be tempted to go back and get another one for lunch.  Or dinner. Or maybe even an indulgent breakfast.  (It’s got dairy, after all). I might just have to go back and pick up two or three extra to bring home for dessert for the family on St. Patty’s Day itself.

If you like a nice, sweet indulgence in the afternoon, and happen to be heading over to visit the chocolate egg display at Grand Floridian, take the advice of the cast members at Gasparilla, and snap one of these little dishes up before the leprechauns steal them away for good.

Egg Displays Bring Touch of Spring to Disney’s Yacht & Beach Clubs

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 14, 2024

When you talk about the gorgeous Easter Egg displays at Disney World, most people immediately think of the “Grand Cottage” and the dozens of fanciful chocolate eggs at Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  Often overlooked, though, are the no less spectacular egg designs at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Clubs, just a quick walk from EPCOT’s International Gateway entrance along Crescent Lake.

Disney’s egg displays are the creations of the dedicated artists wielding culinary paintbrushes behind the scenes.  The eggs are adorned with guests’ favorite Disney characters and movie themes, and are made of such short-lived supplies as modeling chocolate, fondant, Krispie rice, and cocoa butter paint.

I’ve always been impressed with the amount of talent the culinary teams show off with these sculpted treasures, but I’m also amazed that the teams are willing to put as many hours as they do into bringing these fleeting creations to life.  By their very nature, the fragile quality of these eggs means they might not even be here in a few weeks as temperatures start to rise. And yet, the artists invest hundreds of hours into these delightful decorations.

The egg displays at the Yacht and Beach Clubs may be significantly smaller than the one at the Grand Floridian, but they are certainly just as interesting to look at.  The Yacht Club’s eggs this year are a bit more whimsical than the eggs at the other locations, and are themed to the Disney animated film, Moana.  Pua the pig; Tamatoa the crab (“Shiny”); and the Kakamora coconut tribe will bring a smile to your face.

At the Yacht Club’s adjoining sister resort, Disney’s Beach Club, the egg display will be paying tribute to the neighboring EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival.   The Beach Club eggs show off Chip and Dale, doing a bit of gardening; a miniature of Flower & Garden’s teenage Groot topiary (making a mess of a vintage cassette tape); Tinker Bell’s fairy house; and butterflies landing on a giant chocolate egg, among others.

The eggs will be on display in the resort lobbies until April 1, 2024. There is no charge to view the exhibits. Get there before they melt!

New Dining App Options Go Into Effect At Disney World

by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 13, 2024

Anyone who has tried to make Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) for a family or group of friends traveling together knows the frustration of trying to find reservations at coveted restaurants at the 60 days out booking window. Even more challenging is when the clock is ticking, and your visit to Disney World is getting closer.  In the past, we’ve spent literal hours trying to track down tables at various restaurants, checking first by dates, then by time of day, and when that didn’t produce results, starting the process all over again with a new restaurant or day.  And all that when the booking windows open at 6 a.m., when our eyes are barely open and the caffeine hasn’t kicked in yet!

Courtesy of the Walt Disney World website

The process became a little easier a few months ago when Disney first updated the My Disney Experience (MDE) app, allowing guests to search open reservations for an entire day, showing more than one open reservation at a time, displaying a greater number of meal times at once.  It made the booking simpler.  But you still had to work a day at a time, and if your chosen day was already closed out, you had to begin again with another date. Trying to coordinate that with various family members’ availability was sometimes daunting.

This week, a new update to the app (and to the online version as well) went live, and it will make the gathering of dining reservations infinitely smoother.  You can now look at available reservations for up to ten days at a glance.

The steps are relatively straightforward, though you do have to be paying attention to the details.  The options won’t automatically pop up in front of you.  You’ll have to click into the fine print under the restaurant’s name in the MDE app.

For argument’s sake, let’s check reservations at ‘Ohana at the Polynesian, a reservation we were able to get for our family reunion group of eight only after days of searching last fall.  We spent a good number of hours, refreshing searches, and going online each and every morning for weeks trying to find a table for any time during the six-day visit.  We finally got one, several weeks before the trip, owing to someone else’s cancellation most likely.  The openings hadn’t been there at the 60-day booking window – they were already snapped up.

Here's what the same search looked like today, after the new option in the app kicked in.  (We used the phone version of our app).  Start at the little circle with the + sign at the bottom of your app, then select “check dining availability.” Sign in with your password, and select your party size, date, and potential dining time. At that point, a list of available restaurants will open up.

For our upcoming trip, we first plugged in a party of 8,  and selected the first day of our potential trip (May 1, in this case).  Then we chose “all day” as an option, and the restaurants with current availability came up.  In this scenario, two seats, with 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. showed up, okay for the older adults in the group, but waaay beyond the tolerance of the kiddos in the party.  We needed to search again.  In the old days, that would mean going back and starting over with a different day.

But, with the new app update, you’ll notice that underneath the available times for that particular day is a small blue notation that reads “Check availability for multiple days.” There’s a miniature icon of a calendar to draw your attention there.  Bingo!  What a great update.  Click into that, and you’ll be able to check for any additional seatings for up to ten days in a row.  Once again, tell the app what time of day you are looking for, and which ten-day segment, and it will spit back any times for the dates in question.  (You can also filter the options by certain parks or resorts.)

In our hypothetical situation, we received 15 different seating options over the ten-day window.  What took less than 30 seconds in the new app update would have been at least an hour of plugging and chugging dates and numbers before.  Unfortunately for our circumstances, all the options were still after 9:00 p.m., but that’s what you get when you are trying for one of the most popular restaurants on Disney property!

Disney isn’t known for the smoothness of its technology, so we’re sure there will still be some bugs to the new system, but for now, we’re thrilled – and we just gained back all sorts of planning hours!

A Sad Rewatch of “Indiana Jones and the Dial Of Destiny”

 by Ray Keating

Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 12, 2024

Okay, it was time. As a big Indiana Jones fan, I’ve avoided doing the rewatch of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny since I first saw it in theaters last year, and wrote my initial review.

Why the delay? Hmm. Life and work certainly are busy. But there was something else lingering, perhaps holding me back.

As I mentioned in my initial review of Dial of Destiny, this Indy fan had real trepidations heading into the movie theater. Indeed, an angst stayed with me throughout the movie: What would they do to one of my all-time favorite characters in fiction?

As the movie ended, I felt relieved, and gave the film 3.5 to 4 stars out of a possible 5. I concluded that review writing: “Well, coming out of the theater, I was at 3.5 stars. But I know that when I re-watch Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny free from worry and angst, I’ll enjoy it more in various ways (such as catching and appreciating more of the humor). And yes, my opinion of the movie will improve – most likely, pushing it up to a solid 4 stars.”

Well, is that how it turned out upon this first re-watch? Alas, no.

In fact, I liked the film less, and would now give it 3 stars out of 5. While it’s entertaining for many of the reasons that I mentioned in the first review, it actually falls far short of the previous four Indy movies.

Why? Director James Mangold, who also served as a co-writer with David Koepp, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, didn’t really know how to tell an exciting, fun Indiana Jones adventure. He captured some of that in the film’s opening scenes taking place on a train in World War II, but that was that. The rest of the film is spent with the audience largely watching an Indiana Jones beaten down and largely beaten by life. Who the heck thought this was a good idea? Well, obviously, Mangold did.

In the end, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny went against who the Indiana Jones character is. (This is similar to what happened with Woody in Toy Story 4 – what the heck, Disney?)

In Dial, it was largely about what Indy has lost. And he is worn out by it all, and this Indiana Jones, lacking in heart and optimism, kind of hangs around throughout the entire movie. The film’s time-travel ending was too over-the-top for some reviewers. For me, it wasn’t the time travel, it was what Indiana Jones did – or didn’t do – while traveling in time.

There is a very brief final moment in the movie when Indy’s hand reaches out and grabs his iconic hat. Is this supposed to tell us that the old Indy is back? If so, by that time, it was too late – especially since this most certainly was Harrison Ford’s last ride as Indiana Jones.

Indeed, we all would have been better off left with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and its near-perfect ending with Indy and Marion getting married, and Indy confidently taking that hat and putting it on his head.
