The Walt Disney Company has been generating a good deal of news in recent months, and much of it hasn’t exactly been great. But in case you missed it, an announcement late last week served up the best news from Disney in a long time.
And what was that? The return of Phineas and Ferb.
It was announced that Dan Povenmire, the co-creator and executive producer of Phineas and Ferb, has entered into a new deal with Disney, and that includes 40 all-new episodes of Phineas and Ferb. For good measure, there will be a second season of the animated superhero series Hamster & Gretel and Povenmire will develop live-action projects.
Phineas and Ferb premiered on Disney Channel and ran from 2007 to 2015. It also included two movies - 2011’s Across the 2nd Dimension and 2020’s Candace Against the Universe.
Povenmire said, “It has been the greatest pleasure of my career to see how an entire generation of kids and parents have embraced the characters and the humor of ‘Phineas and Ferb.’ I’m eagerly looking forward to diving back into the show for them and for a whole new generation.”
Between Phineas and Ferb, Milo Murphy’s Law and Hamster & Gretel, Povenmire wrote or co-wrote more than a staggering 500 songs!
He also voices Dr. Heinz Doofenschmirtz on Phineas and Ferb.
What makes a great and lasting so-called children’s show? I made the following point a few years ago: “Something on the surface meant for children manages to also provide humor that clearly flies over the heads of little tots but lands sweetly for adults. In this way, The Muppets stand side by side with such wonders as Looney Tunes, Animaniacs, Phineas and Ferb, and The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.”
The return of Phineas, Ferb, Candace, Perry the Platypus, Doofenshmirtz, Isabella, Baljeet, Buford, Major Monogram and the rest of the Phineas and Ferb gang in the hands of an original creator, indeed, is good news for children of all ages.
