New Disney After Hours Events Added on Both Coasts

After-hours events are a hot topic at Disney this week, with new events scheduled for both Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. Disney World is even adding a park that has never been featured before as one of its upcoming after hours events.

At Disney World, EPCOT will be joining the list of parks offering these specially ticketed experiences to guests seeking lower crowds during their vacations. The three-hour-long events take place from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am, after the parks close to day guests, and typically include early entry into the parks on party nights (as early as 7:00 pm, so you can get in more than the 3 party hours!), low-wait access to park rides, lots of (included) snacks at carts throughout the park, unique character meet-and-greets, dance parties and more.

Also at Disney World, H2O Glow After Hours will be returning to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park from 8:00-11:00 pm on 18 select nights from May to September, with glow-lights, specialty snacks, and DJ dance parties. Hollywood Studios has added more dates to the line-up for that park, and Magic Kingdom’s nighttime parties are already underway as well.

This year’s new parties are scheduled to kick off May 20 at Typhoon Lagoon and June 1 at EPCOT. Magic Kingdom’s parties continue through March 27 (tickets are already on sale), and Hollywood Studios has added additional dates beginning May 3 to their often sold out events. Tickets are on sale now for the existing Hollywood Studios’ dates (through April 19), with the new May and June party dates going on sale March 3. According to Disney Parks Blog, “Event tickets for EPCOT, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Hollywood Studios can be purchased by all guests starting March 3, 2023, with prices ranging from $75 to $149 (plus tax). Guests of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels can begin purchasing Disney After Hours tickets for EPCOT and Typhoon Lagoon as early as February 28. The advance-purchase window is available to guests at Disney Resort hotels and Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels, as well as Shades of Green at Walt Disney World Resort.”

There are ticket discounts available for Annual Pass Holders and Disney Vacation Club holders for certain dates, and ticket prices vary by date and by park event.

Over on the west coast, Disneyland has added two more themed after dark parties to its existing themed nites, such as the already sold out March 2023 Princess Nites. The new additions are: Disneyland After Dark: Throwback Nite and Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite.

Disneyland After Dark begins with a three-hour pre-party mix-in from 6 p.m. to  9 p.m. at Disneyland park, then the private party begins from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.  In addition to low ride wait times, party guests at Disneyland After Dark get unlimited digital downloads of Disney PhotoPass photos taken during the party.

Disneyland After Dark: Throwback Nite takes place April 18 and 20, 2023, at Disneyland Park. Guests are encouraged to dress up in their favorite “flashback fashions” from the ‘50s and ‘60s while they enjoy music from “the first decade of Disneyland park.” They may even see Mickey and friends dressed in their best throwback attire!

According to Disney Parks Blog, Throwback Nite also includes the chance to:

 

• Gaze upon “Fantasy in the Sky,” a nighttime spectacular giving a nod to the same-named fireworks display that first illuminated the night in Disneyland park in 1957!
• Do the twist, the mashed potato and bunny hop your way to dance parties around Disneyland park with bands and deejays inspired by the era.
• Snack like it’s 1955 with treats that are inspired by the park’s early days, made once again just for this event!
• Picture yourself in vintage photo backdrops of attractions and posters from yesteryear like Skyway or Autopia, and from timeless Disney films captured by Disney PhotoPass photographers at the party.
• Enjoy after-hours access to iconic Disneyland attractions such as Peter Pan’s Flight, Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise.
• Enjoy pre-party mix-in admission to Disneyland park starting at 6 p.m., no theme park reservation required.

 

If you prefer your entertainment from a “Galaxy Far, Far Away,” Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite may be more your style.  This event takes place May 2, 4, 8 & 11, 2023, from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am at Disneyland Park.  Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite even lets you come dressed as your favorite Star Wars hero or villain, and:

 

• Be wowed watching “Star Wars: Celebrate the Nite”  as fireworks illuminate the skies above Disneyland park. This pyrotechnic spectacle is set to the powerful music of Star Wars films.
• Prepare for Captain Phasma and her Stormtroopers during the March of the First Order in Tomorrowland, as they search for a Resistance spy.
• You may encounter travelers across the galaxy like Tusken Raiders and Jawas. 
• Get ready to master a lightsaber! Attend the Lightsaber Instructional demonstration, where you will learn to handle a lightsaber through a series of elite moves, sure to bring out your inner Jedi!
• Picture yourself in dynamic photo backdrops featuring some of the galaxy’s favorite heroes and villains, captured by Disney PhotoPass photographers at the party.
• Explore themed snacks such as galactic churros and other out-of-this-world sweets!
• Begin your adventure with pre-party mix-in admission to Disneyland park starting at 6 p.m., no theme park reservation required.

 

A limited number of Disneyland After Dark tickets went on pre-sale for Magic Key holders on February 21, 2023, on Disneyland.com. (As of this writing, Presale Magic Key tickets for Star Wars Nite are already sold out). Tickets for the general public go on sale on February 23, 2023 (9 a.m. PT), and are subject to availability, and range from $129 for the April 18 Throwback Nite, to $145 for the April 20 Throwback Nite, to $149 to $169 for Star Wars Nite, depending on the date. Check the Disneyland website for all the pertinent details on the tickets, costuming, and up-to-date availability.

And a note to those who may be vacationing at Disney during these time frames, even if you aren’t planning on attending an after-hours party:  the parks often close earlier than expected on party nights, so pay attention to the park closing times ahead of your trip so you don’t get caught off-guard. You may want to choose a different park to visit that day so you don’t lose valuable park time due to early closing hours at certain parks.

Final Weekend for 2023 Festival of the Arts

The clock is running out if you haven’t yet made it to the 2023 EPCOT Festival of the Arts.  The artistic extravaganza is in its final weekend, and you only have until February 20 to get to this all-too-short festival and maybe paint a few squares on the wall mural.

 

We had several pieces of art that we wanted to get signed by the visiting artists, so we made our way to World Showcase for these final festival days, and scooped up a few of the dishes we hadn’t been able to sample in our first go-around.  And we found a few gems amidst the Food Studios this time.  

At Pastoral Palate in the Germany pavilion, we discovered a dish that we are very sorry that we will not have the opportunity to enjoy again. If only we’d tried it earlier. Hopefully, it will return in future years because it was a winner in our book.  The Wild Boar Cassoulet ($9.25) with duck confit, ham hock and wild boar sausage was delicious!  The meat was uber-tender, perhaps the most meltingly tender of any of the dishes we’ve tried in the past few festivals.  Hubby had forgotten the plastic knives, but it turned out that we didn’t even need them, because cutting it with the side of the fork sufficed.  The small filet was nicely seared and seasoned on the outside, just enough to give some additional flavor to the meat.  The bland bean cassoulet that the meat rested on, though, was nothing more than a blank canvas to show off the boar and duck.  There was a bit of texture, but not much flavor.  We chuckled to ourselves as we enjoyed the dish, because we’d passed by this booth several times without giving it a second thought. After all, who goes to a theme park to eat boar?  And truthfully, we were a little skeptical about trying the offering.  We picked it up, almost on a lark, for the novelty of saying we’d eaten boar.  We were so glad we did, because without a doubt it was one of the “best of the fest” dishes for us!

Also at Pastoral Palate in the Germany pavilion, we tried the Red Wine-Braised Beef Short Ribs ($8.50).  Served with a lovely parsnip puree, crisp broccolini, a smattering of various colors of baby tomatoes, and a drizzle of aged balsamic, the dish was also a big hit with our family.  The flavor of the short rib was a satisfying, strong beef tone, and while it wasn’t quite as tender as the wild boar and duck, it was just as good as you’d expect from a long-simmering Sunday roast.  The sweet parsnip puree provided a nice backdrop to the beef, and the crunchy broccolini added a bit of texture to the whole plate.

 

Apparently, it was a meat-centric expedition this time, because over at Craftsman’s Courtyard, near the Creations shop, we tried the Beef Wellington ($8.50), another very tender cut of beef that was small but delightful.  Our family has served Beef Wellington for Christmas a number of times, and it is always a time-consuming chore to make, so we were excited to try someone else’s handiwork with this dish.  It did not disappoint.  The beef was tender and flavorful, and while the pastry coating the outside of the beef was a little soggier than the flaky pastry you’d normally expect from Wellington, it blended well with the meat.  We would definitely order it again.  It was served with a slightly salty gravy, and three small onions on top, along with a few of the most adorable, teeny tiny carrots we’d ever seen.  The carrots were so small they were no longer than the nail on your pinky, with a miniscule bit of greenery still attached to their tops. (The carrots were perfectly cooked – how did they manage that for the size?). Once again, you hardly needed the plastic knife to cut the beef.

Hubby took the advice of so many Arts’ Festival guests and headed for Moderne, over near the Creations shop.  There he ordered the Angry Crab ($7.25), a relative bargain in the food booth universe, particularly for the quality of the dish. The plate is a whole soft-shelled crab, fried crispy, with a green papaya salad, mango-Sriracha fluid gel, coconut lime foam with pomegranate, and mango crushed pearls.  Wow, that’s a mouthful!  The crab itself was pleasantly crunchy without being overcooked, and had a tiny bit of a kick.  The crab was offset nicely by the various sauces and the slaw that was piled high beneath it.  While my husband loved the crab itself, he wasn’t as big a fan of the accompaniments, which while creative, he thought detracted a bit from the traditional-ness of soft-shelled crab.  (It is, though, an Arts festival, so the chefs do like to show off their creative side…) Regardless, the family enjoyed it so much, that both hubby and son went back to the Angry Crab again on a second occasion.

Also at Moderne, hubby added the Pan Seared Scallops ($7.50), two small scallops with vanilla-butternut squash puree, brown butter cauliflower puree, and lime foam.  The scallops were perfectly cooked, with a great, fresh seafood taste. The dots of the various purees were an interesting side note to the scallops, with some dots providing a sweet accompaniment to the milder scallops, but the white polka dots being “just sort of there.”

 

The one disappointment to the day’s meals was the grilled cheese.  I know, hard to mess with grilled cheese, right?  But it’s probably my own fault.  I think I’d built up too much anticipation for the sandwich (or, more correctly, half sandwich) based on other people’s recommendations.  I was expecting angels to sing.  But it was just a grilled cheese.  I’d ordered the fancy version, the Tomato Soup with the Pimento cheese, bacon and fried green tomato grilled cheese at Pop Eats! (near Port of Entry, by the now defunct Starbucks’ booth). The $6.50 plate came with a small cup of tomato soup and a half sandwich.  Admittedly, there wasn’t anything wrong with the grilled cheese (though the bread was a bit crunchy), and the tomato soup tasted fresh, not the tinny taste you get from canned soup, but with all the other opportunities floating around at the myriad of booths, I should have spent the money and calories elsewhere.  The bacon disappeared into the sandwich without adding much to the flavor, and the fried green tomato added some texture to the dish, with the tiniest bit of a bite from the pimento cheese, but otherwise it just wasn’t a standout dish for us – and I so wanted it to be!

Bellies full, we headed for the America Gardens Theatre to catch one last spectacular performance of Disney on Broadway, before heading for the exit, grabbing a delicious “Panda” Bubble Milk Tea ($8.75) from The Painted Panda near China on our walk out.  The black tea and milk concoction was made with a hint of chocolate and a sizeable swirl of whipped cream, with two Oreo cookies on top, forming an adorable silhouette of Mickey’s ears.  And they certainly didn’t skimp on the Boba pearls in the cup.

We are just days away from the start of the 2023 Flower & Garden Festival (the topiaries have started to sneak their way into the park already), and there will be a whole new set of food booths arriving.  But I still wish the Festival of the Arts was a bit longer to get a chance to sample more Food Studios, and meet a few more of our favorite artists.  And maybe add some painted squares to the murals…. or find more hidden chalk drawings of our favorite Disney characters.  By the time the Flower & Garden festival starts, those cute little chalk cartoons will be only a memory!

Disney World Hosts the Tampa Bay Rays

Pitchers and catchers have their first workout of Spring Training today (February 15) at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The first full squad workouts will be on Monday, February 20.

 

Morning workouts begin at 9:30, with fans having free access to the backfields (though the stadium will not be open to fans), according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The Major League Spring Training camp for the Rays will be at the Disney World facility until March 1. It will then shift to the Rays regular season stadium, Tropicana Field. However, the team’s Minor League Spring Training will remain at the ESPN Complex through March.

 

For good measure, the Rays first home Spring Training game will be against the New York Yankees on February 28 at Disney. But that will be the only preseason game at the ESPN Complex.

 

After being damaged by Hurricane Ian, the Rays’ normal Spring Training home, the Charlotte Sports Park complex, will not be available until next year.

Dining Reservations Opening Next Week for Roundup Rodeo BBQ

The long-awaited Roundup Rodeo BBQ at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios will be opening March 23, 2023, but don’t wait until then to book your advanced dining reservations.  The reservation booking process begins February 21, 2023! You can begin making reservations up to 60 days in advance of your visit.

Roundup Rodeo BBQ will be a sit-down venue, with family-style barbecue offerings, served surrounded by Andy’s vision of a rodeo arena for his toys. Andy has created western towns and train station playsets where your favorite Toy Story characters are getting ready to perform in Andy’s rodeo. Guests are invited to be honorary toys for the day, so you will feel shrunk down to the size of a toy, surrounded by oversized versions of your Toy Story favorites.

 

The restaurant is located in Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios, so you’ll need both a park admission and park reservation to dine here.

Disney Says Bye, Bye to Reedy Creek

Florida state lawmakers finished doing the bidding of Governor Ron DeSantis last week by establishing a new special district – the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District – replacing the Reedy Creek Improvement District. 

Reedy Creek was established in 1967, and allowed Disney to self-govern the land upon which Disney World sits. The renamed district now will have a board selected by the governor, with approval from the state senate.

 

As expected and based on a statement released on Friday, Disney is looking to work under the new system. Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle released the following statement on February 10: 

 

“For more than 50 years, the Reedy Creek Improvement District has operated at the highest standards, and we appreciate all that the District has done to help our destination grow and become one of the largest economic contributors and employers in the state. We are focused on the future and are ready to work within this new framework, and we will continue to innovate, inspire and bring joy to the millions of guests who come to Florida to visit Walt Disney World each year.”

 

A page has been turned in the relationship between The Walt Disney Company and the state of Florida. The question is: What additional costs and uncertainties will Disney face going forward whether the governor is a Republican or Democrat?

Peltz Ends Disney Board Bid – A Win for Both Peltz and the Disney Board?

Chalk up a win for Disney CEO Bob Iger and the company’s board, as activist and mega-Disney investor Norman Peltz has ended his bid for a seat on the Disney board. Or is it a win for Peltz? Perhaps both?

Peltz liked what Iger had to say about restructuring and costs savings on the Disney earnings call on February 8.

 

Indeed, the agenda laid out by Iger basically was what Peltz had been arguing for, that is, reducing costs, rationalizing the streaming business with a focus on profits, and bringing back a Disney dividend. Obviously, Iger’s successor remains an open question – another Peltz concern – but one can argue that that process has been rationalized as well since Iger first came back, given that the soon-to-be Disney chairman, Mark Parker, will be heading up that work.

 

On CNBC this morning, Peltz explicitly told Jim Cramer, “Now Disney plans to do everything we wanted them to do. We wish the very best to Bob [Iger], this management team and the board. We will be watching. We will be rooting.”

 

Sounds like a win-win.

Disney: Earnings, Cost Reductions and the Dividend

The Walt Disney Company’s earnings for the quarter ended December 31, 2022, ran ahead of market expectations. Revenues also came in ahead of what was expected.

 

CEO Bob Iger announced a company reorganization under three areas – entertainment, ESPN, and parks, experiences and products. He also emphasized cost reductions, with an announced target of $5.5 billion in savings, which will include cuts in marketing and a 7,000 reduction in the Disney workforce.

For good measure, Iger announced that he is asking the board to reinstate the Disney stock dividend by the end of this calendar year, though at a more “modest” level than where it was prior to the pandemic. Disney CFO Christine McCarthy noted that this dividend would be “a small fraction” of pre-pandemic level, with the intention that it would grow with earnings.

 

Also, Iger announced that an Avatar attraction will be coming to Disneyland, and animated sequels to Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia are in the works.

 

Compared to the same quarter last year, Disney’s revenues were up by 8 percent, coming in at $23.5 billion.

 

The diluted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.70, versus $0.63 in the same quarter last year, while diluted EPS excluding certain items registered $0.99 versus $1.11 last year.

 

Disney+ subscribers declined from 164.3 million in the previous quarter to 161.8 million in the latest. The losses came in India and Southeast Asia, as Disney lost the streaming rights to India Premier League cricket.  ESPN+ subscribers increased from 24.3 million to 24.9 million, and Hulu subs rise from 47.2 million to 48.0 million.

 

However, streaming losses narrowed for the company, and Iger emphasized cost reviews across streaming.

 

Disney CEO Bob Iger was quoted in the earnings statement: “After a solid first quarter, we are embarking on a significant transformation, one that will maximize the potential of our world-class creative teams and our unparalleled brands and franchises. We believe the work we are doing to reshape our company around creativity, while reducing expenses, will lead to sustained growth and profitability for our streaming business, better position us to weather future disruption and global economic challenges, and deliver value for our shareholders.” 

 

Iger emphasized a return of authority to creative areas, which will include distribution and financial decisions.

 

As for the Disney parks, it was reported: “Disney Parks, Experiences and Products revenues for the quarter increased 21% to $8.7 billion and segment operating income increased 25% to $3.1 billion. Higher operating results for the quarter reflected increases at our domestic parks and experiences and, to a lesser extent, our international parks and resorts. Operating income growth at our domestic parks and experiences was due to higher volumes and increased guest spending, partially offset by cost inflation, higher operations support costs and increased costs for new guest offerings.” Iger called parks performance “outstanding.”

 

At the time of this writing, approximately an hour after the markets closed on Wednesday, Disney stock was up by better than six percent in after-hours trading.
