DOLE Whip Day Comes to Disney World This Week

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

July 17, 2024

If DOLE Whip Day isn’t a national holiday, maybe it should be – and I’m NOT including the fake hard-frozen DOLE Whip desserts you can get in your supermarket freezer.  Those just aren’t real DOLE Whip.

Thursday, July 18, marks the fourth annual celebration, which apparently takes place the third Thursday of July each year (who knew?), and this year the dessert-fest runs through July 21. Disney Parks Blog has released a rather extensive Foodie Guide for the DOLE Whip, and it includes the location not only of all the existing offerings, but of a few new treats for this year’s commemoration.

Back in the early days of our vacationing at Disney World, you could only get one flavor of DOLE Whip (pineapple), and it was only available at one location (Aloha Aisle) in the Adventureland section of Magic Kingdom.  So important to our Disney vacations was it that I actually used to carve out space for DOLE Whips in my printed-paper-spreadsheets of our visit for the day, just to make sure we didn’t accidentally miss it.  (Those were the days before phone apps kept track of all these things for you!).

Fast forward a few decades, and DOLE Whips have multiplied across the Disney-sphere, with myriad flavors and locations. (We are kind of partial to the coconut flavor as well.). There’s even a newer cherry flavor mixing it up with a pineapple swirl in the far corner of EPCOT at Refreshment Outpost.  We tried it, and found the strong cherry-flavored portion a touch “artificial” tasting, but the pineapple smoothed it out enough that it was a cool and welcoming treat in the middle of a sweltering Florida evening. The cherry was definitely the dominant flavor, though, so if you like cherry, this is the choice for you.  If not, maybe stick with the OG whip.

These days, instead of just a cone or a cup, your DOLE Whip can be served as a more artistic novelty, with colored cones, real flowers, chocolate medallions and embellishments, and cute names like The Lost Princess Cone or the Tropical Serenade. The I Lava You Float, the Orange Bird Float, and the Bathtub Float add in your favorite sodas for the thirst-quenching ride (and yup, it’s actually served in a plastic bathtub dish!)  There are now some DOLE Whip concoctions available in certain table-service restaurants, and you can get your DOLE Whip in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of some creations. A few confectionary counters even have adorable  “DOLE Whip” cupcakes on the menu.

However you prefer your DOLE Whip (and did you really go to Disney if you didn’t get one?), here is the Foodie Guide for DOLE Whip Day 2024 for the Disney World Resort in Florida. If you find yourself in Disneyland instead, Disney Parks Blog has a section in the Dole Whip Foodie Guide for the west coast, too, as well as for those of you sailing the high seas on the Disney Cruise Line. Just imagine yourself watching the sunset over the ocean while spooning up a scoop of frozen heaven...

DOLE Whip Day??? Can We Make It a Month Instead?

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

July 19, 2023

How did we ever miss this in past years?

Disney will be celebrating its third annual DOLE Whip Day on July 20, and will keep the tasty party going through July 23.  Honestly, though, in order to get through all these specialty treats, we’d need at least a month.

Courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

Disney explains that this fete takes place the third Thursday of July each year, and it’s “been officially designated as National DOLE Whip Day by Chase’s Calendar of Events – an official compendium of holidays worldwide. Not to mention this year marks the 40th anniversary for DOLE Whip.”

For our family, we’ve always leaned toward the iconic Pineapple DOLE Whip cup, eaten on the sidewalk in Frontierland in Magic Kingdom while waiting for the parade to come through. Though, truth be told, we can also be talked into a DOLE Whip float, or even the DOLE Whip swirled with vanilla ice cream for a change of pace.  Once, we even ventured into the DOLE Whip Pineapple Upside Down Cake thingy, but that was just going a bit too far – no one wanted to move in the Florida heat after that overly sweet treat. Some folks like to add a touch of alcohol to their DOLE Whip, but for us, the added price has never really livened up the classic experience, though the Frozcato at Wine Bar George with its pineapple DOLE Whip was a delicious alternative with dinner for our group.

Back in the day, you could only get a DOLE Whip in the classic pineapple flavor, but now there are myriad variations served up for different holidays and celebrations, from coconut, to lime, watermelon, and even chile-mango whip. You might find one themed after a princess or villain for extra fun. There was even an order of DOLE Whip “nachos” at Disney Springs.

And gone are the days when the Magic Kingdom was the only place to get this refreshing treat (at least here on the east coast.)  Now, the DOLE Whip and its various iterations are available at certain resort hotels like the Polynesian (love you, Pineapple Lanai!), the Disney Cruise Line, the overseas resorts, and Aulani Resort & Spa. (But really, Aulani is in Hawaii, home of the DOLE Plantation, so that one really makes the most sense!). Some say that there are also DOLE Whip wannabes in certain big box store food courts, masquerading under similar names.

If you are a true DOLE Whip fan, and need the merch to prove it (ahem… note to husband… just sayin’), there is a fabulous “Disney100 Jungle Cruise Dessert Bowl served with DOLE Whip” up for grabs this year on the west coast (please, please bring it to Florida!), or a special tiki mug filled with DOLE Whip, also a west coast only treat.  (Insert sad face here!)

For those of you ready to embark on a DOLE Whip adventure this year, Disney has supplied a handy “DOLE Whip Foodie Guide” to help you discover your new favorite DOLE Whip flavor. It includes both the existing DOLE Whip locations, as well as the limited time offerings for this year’s celebration.  Oh, what a chore it will be to suss this one out! But eat fast – it’s Florida and it’s summer. That DOLE Whip swirl isn’t going to last.

New Halloween Treats Begin Showing Up at Disney World Theme Parks

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

September 17, 2022

It’s still in the 90s during the day here in Florida, but the smell of pumpkin spice in the air leaves no doubt about the fact that the Autumn season has already begun at Disney World.  With the change of seasons also comes the debut of tons of spooky and spicy new treats for Halloween.

Among the most gorgeous treats we’ve spied?  The “Minnie Ghost Pinata” from The Ganachery at Disney Springs impresses us the most.  So adorable!  (All photos courtesy of Disney Parks Blog except for the Glow-in-the-Dark Mickey Mummy Popcorn Bucket.)

As big Dole Whip fans, we’re also looking forward to trying the “Witch’s Flight” at Swirls on the Water at Disney Springs. It’s a trio of Pumpkin soft-serve, purple cheesecake soft-serve, and DOLE Whip.

And for those of you collecting souvenir popcorn buckets and sippers, this year’s Donald Duck Candy Corn sipper is sooo stinkin’ cute, and will soon be available at a number of kiosks throughout the parks.

Keep an eye out, as well, for the Glow-in-the-Dark Mickey Mummy Popcorn Bucket, which has already popped up around Disney. (We found ours in Magic Kingdom at the Castle hub popcorn stand two weeks ago.)

If you’ll be hitting the ground running at Disney World in the next few weeks, the Disney Parks Blog has shared this delicious sounding list of all the special upcoming treats for you.

Check in with Disney Parks Blog’s extra list of all the treats at the resorts.

We actually think the resorts are showcasing some of the more charming treats, like the “Tamatoa,” a chocolate chiffon cake resembling a certain Moana crab, with Hawaiian Chantilly filling and shiny sprinkles at Capt. Cook’s and Kona Island at the Polynesian; or the “Monster Mousse,” made of pistachio mousse, morello cherry, and milk chocolate crumble at Le Petit Café at Riviera Resort; or the “Whoopie Monster,” a purple and green whoopie pie with tiny little fangs and big eyes, jazzed up with spiced apple and marshmallow buttercream and caramel. You can find it at Pop Century.

Special Dole Whips a Mother’s Day Hit

 by Ray Keating

Review

DisneyBizJournal.com

May 9, 2021

Disney did Mother’s Day right in 2021. How? There were two – not one but two – opportunities to celebrate with Mom over special Dole Whips. And that’s exactly what we did.

The first stop was for a Key Lime Pie Dole Whip at the Polynesian Village Resort’s Pineapple Lanai. How can you go wrong?

Key Lime Pie? Check. Dole Whip? Check. Combining the two? Check.

The lime soft serve came on top of crumbled graham cracker crust, with orange mango jam swirled on top, accompanied by a message to “Mom” on a piece of white chocolate and a real flower. The Dole Whip was both sweet and tart, and the graham crackers made for a nice base. The orange jam swirl didn’t really come into play. In the end, it was very lime-y – in a good way.

After much shopping and walking, we later arrived at Marketplace Snacks in Disney Springs for a special strawberry and chocolate soft-serve Dole Whip accompanied by a chocolate-dipped strawberry and edged with colorful heart-shaped sprinkles.

Again, this hit all the checkmarks. The mix of strawberry and chocolate – often underrated or overlooked when it comes to soft serve or other forms of cool delight (such as hard ice cream or frozen yogurt) – was delicious, and its Dole Whippiness was perfect as the temperature seemed to creep higher late in the day. And anytime a chocolate covered strawberry is presented, that’s a big plus.

Each was priced at $5.49 and well worth the price. However, I must confess that for this Dole Whip lover, nothing has yet reached my level of appreciation for the pineapple-vanilla and the orange-vanilla Dole Whip swirls. Those rank as heavenly.
