Remembering Disney Legend Frank Wells

 by Ray Keating

Commentary

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 4, 2024

(Listen to an audio version of this article here.)

March 4 marks the birth date of Frank Wells who served as Disney president and chief operating officer alongside CEO Michael Eisner from September 1984 until Wells’ untimely death in a helicopter crash in April 1994.

Eisner and Wells working together were often compared to Walt and Roy Disney, as a duo with critical complementary skills. While Walt and Roy built The Walt Disney Company, Eisner and Wells saved the company in the 1980s, and revitalized it in terms of animation, park expansion, and an international reach.

On Wells, D23.com noted: “Excellent with detail-oriented business and finance, Frank also readily delved into both creative and administrative endeavors. At Disney, he focused on all aspects of the company, including theme parks, real estate, finance, administration, and corporate sponsorships. As a key supporter of Disneyland Paris, Frank expanded the Company’s international presence and also promoted development of The Disney Store. He was known throughout the company as a friendly, kind soul who was always approachable and open to ideas.”

In his obituaryThe New York Times noted:

Mr. Wells, who was Disney's president and chief operating officer, played a major role in the turnaround of Disney after he was recruited in 1984 along with Michael D. Eisner, the company's chairman and chief executive. Internal turmoil had threatened to break up the company, whose headquarters are in Burbank.

In the last 10 years, Mr. Wells and Mr. Eisner helped to increase annual revenues to $8.5 billion from $1.5 billion. The company's market value leaped to $22 billion from $2 billion, and revenue from theme parks and resorts tripled, the company said.

Mr. Wells and Mr. Eisner re-established Disney's dominance in animated feature films with a series of hits that included "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin."

The Los Angeles Times reported at the time: “Wells and Eisner were one of the few stable executive teams in Hollywood. Eisner and Wells had a rare working partnership, and industry executives say Wells will be difficult to replace. ‘He behaved in the corporate world with an ethical standard unparalleled in my experience. I have lost a dear friend and my most treasured colleague,’ Eisner said in a statement.”

Wells was named a Disney Legend posthumously, and that designation is well-deserved.

Disney Synergy on Display with Disney+ and Resorts News

by Ray Keating

News/Analysis

DisneyBizJournal.com

April 5, 2022

Back to the days of Walt Disney, synergy has been a big thing for The Walt Disney Company, even before the word “synergy” was used. The latest example of Disney synergy was the company’s announcement earlier today (April 5) that Disney+ subscribers will get savings on stays at select Walt Disney World resorts.

What is synergy? Quite simply, it’s about bringing together two or more products or services with the result generating more value than what would have been achieved separately.

Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner often talked about Disney synergy. For example, Eisner observed, “The term synergy may be the object of ridicule throughout the world, but not at Disney. This concept of cross-promotion and transformation of popular products into new media is an engine that helps drive our company. Synergy, for us, goes with creativity – which rhymes with selectivity – which means keeping one’s eye on the ball.”

Indeed, it’s kind of hard to miss Disney synergy. Disney has long done cross promotions on brands, merchandise, movies, television shows, theme parks, hotels and resorts, stage shows, music, sports, and other undertakings, all working together to create added value, whether it be at one location, such as at Disney World, online, or around the globe.

And now the company seeks added synergy between Disney+ and its resorts. That’s not surprising given the emphasis that Disney is placing on streaming as its anchor for growth going forward. Indeed, I noted this in a January 22, 2022, article: “Disney differs from Netflix in that it is not only a streaming play. While CEO Bob Chapek has made it clear that Disney’s main emphasis moving forward will in fact be direct-to-consumer, streaming efforts, that doesn’t mean that the rest of this vast entertainment company, such as theme parks, the cruise line, resorts, merchandise, and so on, will somehow be neglected. Indeed, since the days of Walt Disney himself, Disney has been known for brand synergy, with one part of the company fueling growth and revenues in other parts.”

Regarding this latest example of Disney synergy, the company noted that Disney+ subscribers could save up to 25 percent on stays at certain Disney World resorts during most nights between July 8 and September 30 of this year. According to Disney, the 25 percent savings will apply to “select Disney Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts,” while “lower savings may be available at other select Resorts.” (Get more information here.)

This is just the beginning, one would presume, in terms of the company seeking to delve deeper into synergistic efforts related to Disney+.

In Defense of Disney CEO Bob Chapek

 by Chris Lucas

Guest Column

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 13, 2022

This month marks the second anniversary of Bob Chapek being named as the seventh CEO of the Walt Disney Company.

Unfortunately for Chapek, the promotion came just a few weeks before Disney faced their greatest outside crisis since World War II, the Covid pandemic that shut down most of their revenue streams around the world.

Even so, Bob Chapek has successfully managed to guide Disney through the rough waters, keeping them solvent while competitors struggled. Former CEO Bob Iger, Chapek’s immediate predecessor, stayed on until December 2021 to assist Chapek.

Here are some things you might not know about Bob Chapek:

• He grew up in Hammond, Indiana, in the 1960s and early 70s. His parents were middle class and both worked outside of the home. Each year starting in 1972, the family would drive to Walt Disney World from Indiana for summer vacation.

• Chapek is a lifelong Disney fan who dreamed of one day working for the company. After graduating Indiana University with a degree in biology, he went to Michigan State for an MBA so he could work in the business world with the goal of a job at Disney.

• Chapek’s first job out of college was for an advertising agency (J. Walter Thompson) then he went to work for Heinz in Pittsburgh as a brand manager. After a few years, he moved to California in 1993 to take an internship with Disney.

• After two years as an intern, Chapek started moving up the Disney corporate ladder in the home entertainment division. Eventually, he became head of the department.

• Chapek utilized one of Walt’s key strategies by creating the “Vault” for Disney Home Video, pulling certain classic titles from circulation, making them hard to find, and then releasing them again every few years for a new generation, just as Walt did with theatrical releases on a seven year (or so) cycle.

• In 2012, Chapek was put in charge of the consumer products division, where he helped to streamline Disney’s licensed merchandise into franchises (Princesses, Villains, Super Heroes, classic characters, dogs, cats, etc.) to make them easier to display and sell on store shelves. That accounted for a three billion dollar lift in merchandise sales in one year.

• In 2015, Chapek was made the head of the parks and experiences division, where he oversaw the largest expansion of the Disney parks, resorts and cruise lines in their history. Attendance also rose to record levels.

• Bob Chapek’s annual salary of $2.5 million is on the low end for CEOs of major international corporations. Each year, he can qualify for contractual performance bonuses based on goals set by his bosses - Disney’s Board of Directors - but that number fluctuates up and down.

• In addition to being Disney CEO, Chapek is on the national board of Make-A-Wish, a charity he has been involved with for decades.

• Bob Chapek is quieter, more reserved and private than past Disney CEOs like Bob Iger and Michael Eisner. He is, admittedly, more of an organizational person than a creative one, but he has made it a point to have meetings with his creative teams at least once a week to develop strategy and hear ideas/complaints.

• The Disney of 2022 is unlike the company that Walt - who died in 1966 - created in 1923. That company was a smaller Hollywood studio that eventually had one theme park and a distribution arm for films and other media. Chapek’s Disney is a complex, interconnected multi-billion dollar global corporation with hundreds of divisions, involved in many industries and with almost 200,000 employees worldwide.

• As such, Chapek has created a blueprint with three pillars, based on Walt’s own philosophy of business, to lead Disney into its next 100 years. Those pillars for Disney are:

1) Storytelling Excellence

2) Innovation

3) Focus on Future Audiences

So far, Chapek and his executive staff have lived up to Walt’s vision – keeping Disney the number one name in family entertainment. They’ve grown Disney far beyond what Walt could have even hoped for and will continue to reach even greater heights as the years go on.

Chapek Lays Out a Walt-Like Vision for Disney with the Question Being Execution

 by Ray Keating

Analysis

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 12, 2022

Bob Chapek offered a memo to Disney staff on Monday (January 10) that outlined his vision for the company. And as much as this comment will aggravate Chapek’s legions of critics, the Chapek memo clearly was influenced by Walt Disney.

To say that Bob Chapek took over the reins of The Walt Disney Company during a challenging time would be to vastly understate matters. Chapek assumed the role of CEO on February 20, 2020. What quickly followed was a global pandemic with near-economy-wide shutdowns, and an ongoing struggle to emerge from a pandemic featuring variants and spikes, supply-chain challenges, labor shortages, and raging inflation.

While Chapek has come under sometimes withering criticism, it’s hard to get a real feel for his performance as CEO given the unique circumstances. Other than World War II, when Disney was still exclusively a movie studio, it’s difficult to think of a more exacting time for the company.

So, what about the memo?

Chapek starts off by thanking staff for their “talent, dedication, and optimism during the most disruptive time in our company’s history,” and for what they were able to achieve during the pandemic.

He then goes on to note that the company is getting set to celebrate its 100th anniversary, and offers three pillars to “ensure Disney’s next 100 years are as successful as our first.”

Chapek describes the first pillar of the company as “storytelling excellence.” He describes one of the tools he will implement to “continue to set the creative bar higher and higher,” that is, “I am establishing a new standing monthly meeting with our senior creative leaders to discuss the opportunities we face as a storytelling enterprise. This will encourage collaboration, sharing of best practices, and stimulate cross-studio ideation.”

The second pillar, according to Chapek, is innovation, specifically, to continue to be “the world’s foremost innovative storytellers,” using technology to give “our creative teams new canvases like the metaverse on which to paint.” He adds, “We should be especially innovative as we seek to bring stories to life in new ways—particularly if they enhance what many call our ‘franchise ecosystem,’ which is one of the things that sets us apart.”

And the third pillar is a “relentless focus on our audience.” Chapek is very clear here, writing that “our most important guide—our North Star—is the consumer. Right now, their behavior tells us and our industry that the way they want to experience entertainment is changing—and changing fast thanks to technology and the pandemic. We must evolve with our audience, not work against them. And so we will put them at the center of every decision we make.”

The Chapek memo is very “Disney,” in that it hits on three big points that started with Walt Disney himself – great storytelling, innovation, and focusing on the consumers, that is, on the Disney guest. Keep in mind that Chapek was promoted from within the company, having spent almost 30 years with Disney in a variety of areas. That’s a very different background compared to the two previous CEOs, Bob Iger and Michael Eisner. So, the fact that his vision memo aligns with long-held company culture is in no way surprising.

Again, his critics already have written Chapek off. But a fair and sober assessment of his performance must wait until the economy returns to something much closer to normal, and he is given some time to advance his agenda. That will include, for example, a significant amount of content scheduled to arrive on Disney+ later this year and going forward, and expanded theme park, cruise line and merchandise operations, for example, as we deal more ably with the pandemic and, hopefully, supply-chain, labor and inflation problems.

Indeed, there’s little to argue with in terms of the vision Chapek laid out in his memo to Disney staff. The question remains: What will Chapek’s execution look like? At this point, a sound assessment just isn’t possible.
