Disneyland Paris Delays Reopening

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 18, 2021

And yet another Disney theme park finds themselves stymied by the coronavirus. Disneyland Paris has announced they are now keeping their fingers crossed for a reopening on April 2, 2021.

Disneyland Paris has had a roller coaster ride of openings, closings and reopenings. After closing in March for the initial French shutdowns, they reopened to park guests on July 15.  They closed again October 29 due to rising COVID-19 numbers in Europe, with dashed hopes of a partial opening for the December shopping holiday from December 19 – January 3. (See the previous DisneyBizJournal story here.)  They’ve remained closed since October, and had anticipated reopening again in February, but now find themselves aiming for a spring return.

Disney has said, “Due to the prevailing conditions in Europe, Disneyland Paris will not reopen on Feb. 13 as initially planned.  If conditions permit, we will reopen Disneyland Paris on April 2, 2021 and will welcome reservations from that date forward. Given the current context our plans continue to evolve, but please know that we will make every effort to share with you any updates as soon as it is possible. Please check back on the website for regular updates. If you have a booking with us during the closing period, please check here for our latest commercial conditions. We thank you for your continued loyalty and understanding during this difficult period.”

In addition, Disneyland Paris is anticipating reopening its hotels in phases, and will contact guests with bookings at the affected hotels directly.  Disney's Newport Bay Club and Disney's Hotel Santa Fe will reopen on April 2, 2021; Disney's Hotel Cheyenne and Disney's Davy Crockett Ranch will open on July 1, 2021; and Disney's Sequoia Lodge on October 23, 2021. The Disneyland Hotel will remain closed until further notice.

Disney advises guests with arrivals before April 2, “If you hold a reservation for an arrival date from 13 February to 1 April 2021, we are happy to offer the option up to 31 March 2021 to book the same holiday at the same price with the same advantages (including dine plans and transport). For a range of arrival dates from 2nd April 2021 to 30 March 2022, if your hotel is available at your chosen date. If your original hotel is not available, we will offer an equivalent package at Disney's Newport Bay Club, at no additional charge. If your original stay was at the Disneyland Hotel, we will refund the difference in price. If you prefer to rebook for a later date, you will be able to do so at the then prevailing rate.”

Disney Welcomes 2021 Dept. of Defense Warrior Games to ESPN Complex

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

December 22, 2020

From Shades of Green, the Department of Defense resort on Disney property, to daily Flag Retreat ceremonies in the Town Square at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland, The Walt Disney Company has had a long history of supporting military families and veterans.  In 2021, they’ll be extending that relationship by hosting the annual Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

The United States Army Training and Doctrine Command announced that the games will be held in Florida in September 2021, inviting hundreds of competitors from across the United States Armed Forces and ally nations to participate through adaptive sporting events, including wheelchair basketball, cycling, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby and more.

According to Cappy Surette, Manager, Executive Communications, Walt Disney World Resort and Co-chair, Disney SALUTE Veteran Business Employee Resource Group, Disney will be donating the venue and services for the event.

“These games truly embody and celebrate the resiliency and dedication of wounded, ill, and injured active duty and veteran military service members,” noted Surette. “And this event provides an opportunity for families, friends and supporters like you to see these incredible wounded warriors shine as they display their true warrior spirit through competitive sports.”

This continuing support for military families would no doubt please Walt Disney himself, who had a deep appreciation for the freedoms enjoyed in America, and protected by our military. Walt, for example, once said, “I thank God and America for the right to live and raise my family under the flag of tolerance, democracy, and freedom.”

Welcome Back, Park Hopping!

by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

November 21, 2020

When Disney World reopened in July after its COVID closure, one of the biggest disappointments for park guests was the suspension of Park Hopper passes. An add-on, paid feature to a guest’s park ticket or annual pass, “Park Hoppers” allowed visitors to enjoy more than one park in a single day.

You could start your day in the Magic Kingdom, then head to the EPCOT restaurants for dinner.  Enjoy Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios, then head over for EPCOTs Food and Wine Festival. Ride Test Track in the morning at EPCOT, then explore the luminescent magic of Pandora at night in the Animal Kingdom. Guests could pack a whole lot more activities into their stay by jumping from park to park.

Yesterday (November 20), there was big news in Disney World as the resort continues expanding its offerings during its phased-in reopenings. Starting January 1, 2021, Disney is bringing back a modified Park Hopper option.

After adding the Park Hopper option to their tickets, guests will still need to make reservations for their first park of the day, and physically go to that park and check in, enjoying what that park has to offer. After 2 p.m., however, they can then head to another Disney park of their choice, enjoying that park until closing without needing a second park reservation. (As January approaches, park hopping may potentially begin later than 2 p.m., so keep an eye on the My Disney Experience App for confirmation of start time.  Entrance to a second park will also be subject to that park’s capacity for the day.)

This news follows an announcement last week from Disney CEO Bob Chapek at Disney’s Quarterly earnings call that attendance limitations were increased from 25% capacity to 35% capacity as Disney heads into its traditionally busy holiday season.

Detailed information is available on the Park Hopper ticket options here. You can also check DisneyWorld.com/ParkHours and the My Disney Experience app for the most up-to-date Park Hopper hours as January approaches.

Sadly, the much-beloved Candlelight Processional will not take place during this year’s festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will, however, be appearances by Santa and seasonally-dressed Disney friends throughout the park, as well as holiday cavalcades. The family can also join the new “Olaf’s Holiday Tradition Expedition” and embark on a scavenger hunt around the World Showcase to retrieve some of the traditions that Olaf has managed to lose on his way to show Elsa and Anna.

While the annual awe-inspiring (and crowd-inducing) gingerbread displays will not take place in the Disney World Resorts, there will be a “Gingerbread City” at EPCOT, made by the Disney chefs and depicting some of our nation’s landmarks. Holiday music will be provided by JOYFUL! A Celebration of the Season; the Voices of Liberty-Voices of the Season; Las Posadas with Mariachi Cobre; and the JAMMitors.

The Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Arts will kick off January 8 and paint its way through February 22, 2021.  There will be more than 15 “Food Studios” serving culinary masterpieces that are as much works of art as they are delicious dining opportunities.  One of the highlights that guests look forward to every year is the opportunity to watch an array of skilled artists at work around the World Showcase, and even purchase some of the artwork to take home.

Festival of the Arts also gives guests a chance to participate in the creativity, with special photo locations that allow visitors to step into life-sized scenes of iconic works of art, try their hand at an over-sized collaborative paint-by-number mural, or even join a scavenger hunt searching for Figment. Live music from favorite EPCOT musical artists Mariachi Cobre and the JAMMitors will add to the festival atmosphere.

Disney guests will need both park admission tickets and park reservations to participate in the festivals. As with all things park-related at this point, COVID-19 may change some of the scheduled plans. Keep up to date as the festivals get closer by checking back on the Disney website.

No Surprise That Disney Extending Furloughs – Consumers Hurting – A Look Inside the Magic Kingdom

by Ray Keating
News/Analysis
DisneyBizJournal.com
August 25, 2020

News has been spreading that Disney is extending the furloughs of various employees. Unfortunately, that’s not surprising based on what DisneyBizJournal’s Beth Keating saw at the Magic Kingdom yesterday (August 24).

Magic Kingdom on August 24, 2020

As Fox Business, for example, noted this morning, “Select employees of Disney World and Disneyland reportedly received an email explaining that their furlough has been extended amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic… Disney actress Sheila Ward claims that she and other staffers received an email on Monday detailing that their furlough was ‘indefinite,’ with no date disclosed regarding when cast members may be called back to work.”

Magic Kingdom on August 24, 2020

(Keep in mind that furloughed workers effectively remain employees and still receive certain benefits (such as Disney still paying health insurance), while laid off workers no longer are employees of a company.)

None of this is surprising based on the DisneyBizJournal Magic Kingdom visit. Beth Keating reported fewer-than-expected kiosks open, some shops and restaurants closed, and limited seating at other sit-down restaurants.

Many rides had waits of 10 minutes or less, even attractions with notoriously long lines, like Peter Pan’s Flight and Space Mountain, were only 15-20 minutes. Others were walk on.

Liberty Square and Frontierland had “ghost town” feels. And the park “empties out by late afternoon.”

Magic Kingdom on August 24, 2020

Magic Kingdom on August 24, 2020

This pandemic has crippled big parts of our economy, with travel and tourism being among the very hardest hit. It should be noted that the Conference Board reported today that its measure of consumer confidence took another big hit in August, after declining in July as well. Lynn Franco, Senior Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board, warned, “Consumer spending has rebounded in recent months but increasing concerns amongst consumers about the economic outlook and their financial well-being will likely cause spending to cool in the months ahead.” For some additional perspective, consider that the latest report from the U.S. Department of Labor on initial jobless claims pointed out that the total number of individuals receiving unemployment benefits in all programs registered 28,059,349 for the week ending August 1. A year earlier, that number was 1,702,382.

Climbing out of this deep hole will take time, with vaccines and therapeutics central to that process. And companies like Disney won’t get back to normal until that happens, along with some other necessities along the way.

Magic Kingdom is Number One Everywhere in the World!

by Beth Keating
News
DisneyBizJournal.com
August 2, 2020

It’s a topic that Disney fans argue about endlessly: Which amusement park is number one? Of course, for Disney fans, the argument is usually about which Disney park is number one among Disney’s parks. (For good measure, many would also argue that Disney parks are theme parks, not amusement parks, in the strictest sense of the word.)

Source: Disney Parks Blog

Be that as it may, TripAdvisor has named five Disney parks to their 2020 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Awards in the “Top 25 Amusement Parks-United States” category, with Magic Kingdom taking the top spot. (Told you so, Ray… see DisneyBizJournal’s debate here!)

On the international side, seven Disney Parks make the cut for the 2020 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Awards in the “Top 25 Amusement Parks - World” categorywith Magic Kingdom once again wearing the crown.

“Every year, we pull together all the reviews, ratings, and saves that travelers share from across the globe — and use that info to spotlight the very best,” reports TripAdvisor. “The Travelers' Choice Best of the Best awards celebrates them all.”

On the 2020 “United States” list, Magic Kingdom ranks #1, with Animal Kingdom coming in at #3, Disneyland California #7, Hollywood Studios at #8, and Disney California Adventure at #10. On the “World” list, Magic Kingdom still reigns supreme at the #1 spot, with Animal Kingdom jumping in at #4 internationally, Disneyland California at #11, Hollywood Studios at #12, Disney California Adventure at #15, Hong Kong Disneyland at #20, and Disneyland Paris at #21.

But wait! There are more Disney Parks topping the lists. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon takes the top spot on the “Top 25 Water Parks-United States” with Blizzard Beach swimming up behind it at #2.  Alas, though, they didn’t fare as well internationally.  Typhoon Lagoon only makes it to #6 and Blizzard Beach plummets to #19 on the “Top 25 Water Parks – World” list. (Siam Park in Spain takes #1.)

For your debate knowledge, here’s the complete list of the “Top 25 Amusement Parks-United States”:

1.    Magic Kingdom Park (Orlando, FL)
2.    Universal’s Islands of Adventure (Orlando, FL)
3.    Disney’s Animal Kingdom (Orlando, FL)
4.    Universal Studios Florida (Orlando, FL)
5.    Universal Studios Hollywood (Los Angeles, CA)
6.    Dollywood (Pigeon Forge, TN)
7.    Disneyland Park (Anaheim, CA)
8.    Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Orlando, FL)
9.    Silver Dollar City (Branson, MO)
10. Disney California Adventure Park (Anaheim, CA)
11. Bay Beach Amusement Park (Green Bay, WI)
12. Fun Spot America (Kissimmee, FL)
13. Knoebels Amusement Park (Elysburg, PA)
14. Santa’s Village (Jefferson, NH)
15. Seabreeze Amusement Park (Rochester, NY)
16. Busch Gardens (Tampa, FL)
17. Funland (Rehoboth Beach, DE)
18. Dutch Wonderland (Lancaster, PA)
19. Canobie Lake Park (Salem, NH)
20. Silverwood Theme Park (Athol, ID)
21. Kentucky Kingdom (Louisville, KY)
22. Nickelodeon Universe (Bloomington, MN)
23. Busch Gardens Williamsburg (Williamsburg, VA)
24. Cedar Point (Sandusky, OH)
25. LEGOLAND California (Carlsbad, CA)

Now you have a whole new set of Bucket Lists to follow.
