How Will I Get To Disney World Now?

 by Beth Keating

With the end of 2021 comes the end of “Disney’s Magical Express,” the complimentary transportation service that whisked guests from the airport to their Disney Resort hotels in the blink of an eye, and without ever having to touch their luggage after they dropped it at their home airport. Indeed, it was, especially for families with small kids, one of the best perks of staying on site.

But now that perk has flown away, leaving guests to ponder how to efficiently and cost-effectively get where they need to go. There are several alternatives to Magical Express that can fill the gap without the need to rent a car (which, these days, is not only enormously expensive, but generates additional nightly parking fees at your Disney hotel).

The most obvious option is to take a Mears shuttle.  Mears operated transportation back and forth to Disney long before the Magical Express came into being, and has been serving the Orlando area since 1939.  (They operate in other cities as well). In fact, in the old days, a Mears voucher was sometimes included in our Disney travel package.  Other times, when no voucher was part of the package, our family called Mears directly to book a ride.

Beginning New Year’s Day, Mears will operate Mears Connect, a transportation service between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and the Disney Resort hotels in two different categories: Standard and Express.

Standard service is a shared ride on a Mears Connect vehicle with a limited number of stops.  Vehicles will have guests on their way within 20 minutes of arrival at the reception area.

Introductory rates for Standard service are $16.00 per adult and $13.50 per child ages 3-9 (one way) or $32 per adult and $27 per child ages 3-9 (round-trip). Children under three ride free.

Express service is direct service to the resort and back to the airport (guaranteed first stop), with limited to no wait time. Express service is not considered private service, though, and may be shared. Introductory rates for Express service are $250.00 for up to four passengers and $55 for each additional passenger.

Mears is planning to add additional locations in Orlando in the coming months; they also offer charter bus, car services, limousines, and taxi services throughout the area.

Contact Mears directly for more information and to book rides.

A second shuttle opportunity arrives on February 1, 2022, when “The Sunshine Flyer” begins operations.  A series of very cool looking motor coaches themed to look like 1920’s-era passenger train cars and locomotives will also greet guests at MCO and transport them to their resort. Even the drivers and staff will be dressed as 1920’s rail conductors and engineers, and every coach wrap is distinct in its style. The Sunshine Flyer is operated by Transportation Management Services, Inc., which has, over the last 26 years, organized transportation for clients such as the National Basketball Association, United States Golf Association, and Major League Soccer.

As of now, tickets are $17 per adult and $12.50 per child ages 3-8 (one way) and $34 per adult, and $25 per child ages 3-8 (round-trip). Children under two can ride on an adult’s lap for free.

The Sunshine Flyer pledges that guests will not wait more than 20 minutes to board their bus, and the ride to the resorts is scheduled so the last stop will not take more than 65 minutes.  The service will also be adding new locations in 2022, including Orlando Hotels, International Drive Hotels, and other Disney Partner Hotels.

Another big bonus?  In honor of Disney’s 50th anniversary, The Sunshine Flyer is donating 50% of their sales during the first 50 days of service to the Make a Wish Foundation of Central & Northern Florida.

Contact The Sunshine Flyer for more information, or call 866-FL-FLYER.

If the shuttle bus routine is not your jam, there are also ride sharing services such as Uber and Lyft operating in the area. Prices for Uber and Lyft will vary based on surge pricing, pick-up and drop-off locations, etc.

And if your trip is still a few years off, there may be an opportunity to take the “train from the plane,” when Brightline eventually opens a station at Disney Springs as part of their planned extension of the high-speed railway’s route from the airport.  That option is likely to be many years down the road, however. You might want to reserve Mears or The Sunshine Flyer in the meantime.

Mears Transportation Announces Replacement For Disney’s Magical Express

 by Beth Keating

Disney guests have known for some time now that the previously free perk known as “Magical Express,” included in their on-site hotel reservations, would be disappearing at the end of this year. It caused quite the conundrum for some families as they tried to figure out how they would make it from Orlando International Airport to their Disney hotel.

Disney’s Magical Express was a free shuttle service provided by Disney for their onsite guests. In advance of guest’s arrival, Disney would send special luggage tags that would identify the guest’s hotel, and guests could check their luggage at their home airport, and not touch it again until they arrived in their Disney hotel room.  Cast members would handle the bags for you at each step along the way, pulling your luggage off your flight, sorting it, and loading it onto trucks to the hotels before magically making the suitcases appear in your room several hours later.

Parents with families in tow found the service especially helpful, as they could get right off their plane and onto the hotel shuttle without stopping at baggage claim to wrangle luggage, kids, car seats and strollers along the way. You didn’t even need to be in your room for the suitcases to be delivered. You could be starting your fun in the parks while cast members handled the heavy lifting!

While the shuttles were Disney branded with happy Disney characters painted on the side of the bus, and Disney programming and music playing on the overhead monitors along your journey, the buses were actually contracted with Mears Transportation for the Magical Express.  It has been rumored since Disney announced they were abandoning the Magical Express that Mears would step in to fill the void. (The Brightline trains slated to take guests from Orlando airport to a Disney Springs station won’t be operational for years yet – perhaps not until 2026.)

Mears has announced that they will be offering a new shuttle service, called “Mears Connect” beginning January 2022, when Disney’s program ends. Mears says they will be offering “the same reliable, safe, express service” that Disney guests have already relied on in connecting the airport and the Disney Resort area.

Mears will begin accepting reservations for the new service in May 2021 for service at the start of the new year. Prices have not yet been released, but guests can sign up for advance notification of the reservation service at the Mears Connect site.  You can also call (407) 422-4561 for additional information.

Mears has been in business since 1939, and provides more than just shuttle buses in dozens of cities throughout the United States. They also offer taxi services, transportation to cruise locations, and bus charters, along with private town car, limo, and luxury transportation services.

Disney Announces End of Magical Express Services; Retires Extra Magic Hours As Well

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

January 11, 2021

Get ready to dig a little deeper for your Disney vacations in 2022. Disney announced today that beginning January 1, 2022, they will no longer be offering Disney’s Magical Express service for airport transportation from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to the resort hotels.

The Disney-run shuttle service between the airport and the Disney hotels allowed guests a convenient, quick and included way of getting from their flights to park property. The service will continue through the end of the year for guests with arrivals in 2021.

The decision to retire the free service will leave guests in the position of having to explore other options for getting to their Disney hotels, perhaps taking a rideshare the 30 minutes or so to Disney property; renting a car for the duration of their stay; or potentially, in the future, taking Brightline’s high-speed rail service that is in the process of being built between the airport and Disney Springs. (See our earlier DisneyBizJournal story here.)

Earlier this year, when the parks reopened following their COVID-19 closure, Disney eliminated the portion of the Magical Express service whereby cast members handled transferring guests’ luggage directly from their flights to their hotel rooms, allowing guests to drop their suitcases at their home airport and not see or handle them again until they arrived in their Disney hotel room.  Guests could get right off a flight, bypass luggage pick-up, and head straight to a park to begin their fun without worrying about their belongings.

Disney has stated, “For nearly 50 years, Walt Disney World Resort has continued to evolve the guest experience to best suit the changing times. As we plan for the future, we are looking at how needs and preferences are changing across the travel industry, particularly in the way people want to get places faster, at their convenience. Vacationers have more options to choose from than ever for transportation, including ride-share services that save time and offer more flexibility to go where they want, when they want.”

While they will be eliminating the Magical Express airport services, Disney has assured guests that transportation options within the parks, such as the buses to and from the resort hotels and the four theme parks, as well as the monorails and Skyliner, will remain complimentary.

As a family that has made use of Magical Express many times in the past, this comes as a big disappointment. The perk of having the cost of transportation to our Disney hotel included in the package price of our vacation certainly made a difference in how many days we could spend at the park. When the kids were younger, the ease of not having to collect suitcases at the luggage carousels and struggle out to a rental car with car seats, strollers, and suitcases in tow, all while wrangling toddlers, was definitely a plus for us, and on more than one occasion, tipped the scales toward visiting Disney for a family vacation versus going elsewhere. Disney certainly made it easier to “get there from here,” increasing the likelihood that we would be spending our vacation dollars at the House of Mouse.

Disney also announced today that they will be retiring their rotating “Extra Magic Hours” program, replacing it with an extra 30 minutes early entry each morning, every morning for Disney hotel guests. (Extra Magic Hours did not return with the park reopenings in July, so essentially, Extra Magic Hours will not be returning at all).

Under the new “Early Theme Park Entry” program, which will be available every day, Disney hotel guests will be able to enter any of the four parks a half hour before the park opens to the general public. Previously, different parks were available for Extra Magic Hours on rotating days, but now all four parks will have early access each day. The new access will begin later this year as part of Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration (specific date to be announced later).

Disney Parks Blog states, “The new early theme park entry benefit helps us better spread visitation across all four theme parks, while providing added flexibility by giving guests extra early park time on each day of their vacation and in the park of their choosing.”
