Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Opening Date Revealed? Ooops!

 by Ray Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 23, 2022

In December, Disney appointed Geoff Morrell as chief corporate affairs officer, which includes oversight of corporate communications. But Morrell's first splash in that office might have been an “Ooops!” moment on February 22 when he appeared to have revealed the opening date of the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at EPCOT … when he wasn’t supposed to do so.

According to several reports, Morrell tweeted that he had just experienced a test ride, and that the rest of us would be able to “Check it out starting Memorial Day weekend!” InsidetheMagic.com offered the following screenshot of the tweet that has since been taken down.

The Walt Disney World website notes that the ride will open in the summer 2022, and describes Cosmic Rewind as follows:

Begin your adventure by touring the Galaxarium—a planetarium-like exhibition showcasing the similarities and differences between Xandar and Earth’s galaxies. You’ll even get to discover some of the incredible wonders of Xandar and learn about their technology.

Just as you are about to reach the culmination of the tour, everything goes sideways, and you are called into action to help the Guardians of the Galaxy. Are you ready to rock out on an awesome quest across the cosmos to save the galaxy? It’s all up to you!

This family-friendly attraction features the first ever reverse-launch on a Disney coaster and is one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world! A new innovation from Walt Disney Imagineering—this coaster rotates 360 degrees so you can focus on the action!

I’m certainly looking forward to rocking out with the Guardians of the Galaxy … perhaps on Memorial Day weekend?

Final Performance of DISNEY ON BROADWAY Concert Series To Be Live Streamed This Evening

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 21, 2022

If you were one of the lucky ones who were able to enjoy in-person performances from some of Disney’s finest Broadway artists this year at the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, or perhaps even saw one of the concerts streamed by the myriad of Disney vloggers in the YouTube ‘verse, you know how phenomenal an opportunity it was to see these singers showcasing the songs they were best known for on Broadway. Tonight, you have one more chance to catch a few of the performers before this year’s DISNEY ON BROADWAY concert series wraps up.

At 8:00 p.m (ET), live from the America Gardens Theatre at EPCOT, Disney will be livestreaming the extended finale performance on the Disney Parks Blog, as well as on @DisneyParks TikTok@DisneyParks  on Facebook and on YouTube.

Tonight’s extended finale features Michael James Scott (Aladdin); Kissy Simmons (The Lion King); Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins); and Josh Strickland (Tarzan).  And while each of the performers has appeared in previous performances this year (as well as in prior years), the artists usually perform in duos. (There were a dozen Broadway stars paired up in this year’s Festival of the Arts series, singing selections from 25 years of Disney stage shows.) Ashley Brown and Josh Strickland appeared together, while Kissy Simmons appeared with Michael James Scott. Tonight’s finale brings together all four of these Broadway talents for this extraordinary performance!

In Defense of Disney CEO Bob Chapek

 by Chris Lucas

Guest Column

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 13, 2022

This month marks the second anniversary of Bob Chapek being named as the seventh CEO of the Walt Disney Company.

Unfortunately for Chapek, the promotion came just a few weeks before Disney faced their greatest outside crisis since World War II, the Covid pandemic that shut down most of their revenue streams around the world.

Even so, Bob Chapek has successfully managed to guide Disney through the rough waters, keeping them solvent while competitors struggled. Former CEO Bob Iger, Chapek’s immediate predecessor, stayed on until December 2021 to assist Chapek.

Here are some things you might not know about Bob Chapek:

• He grew up in Hammond, Indiana, in the 1960s and early 70s. His parents were middle class and both worked outside of the home. Each year starting in 1972, the family would drive to Walt Disney World from Indiana for summer vacation.

• Chapek is a lifelong Disney fan who dreamed of one day working for the company. After graduating Indiana University with a degree in biology, he went to Michigan State for an MBA so he could work in the business world with the goal of a job at Disney.

• Chapek’s first job out of college was for an advertising agency (J. Walter Thompson) then he went to work for Heinz in Pittsburgh as a brand manager. After a few years, he moved to California in 1993 to take an internship with Disney.

• After two years as an intern, Chapek started moving up the Disney corporate ladder in the home entertainment division. Eventually, he became head of the department.

• Chapek utilized one of Walt’s key strategies by creating the “Vault” for Disney Home Video, pulling certain classic titles from circulation, making them hard to find, and then releasing them again every few years for a new generation, just as Walt did with theatrical releases on a seven year (or so) cycle.

• In 2012, Chapek was put in charge of the consumer products division, where he helped to streamline Disney’s licensed merchandise into franchises (Princesses, Villains, Super Heroes, classic characters, dogs, cats, etc.) to make them easier to display and sell on store shelves. That accounted for a three billion dollar lift in merchandise sales in one year.

• In 2015, Chapek was made the head of the parks and experiences division, where he oversaw the largest expansion of the Disney parks, resorts and cruise lines in their history. Attendance also rose to record levels.

• Bob Chapek’s annual salary of $2.5 million is on the low end for CEOs of major international corporations. Each year, he can qualify for contractual performance bonuses based on goals set by his bosses - Disney’s Board of Directors - but that number fluctuates up and down.

• In addition to being Disney CEO, Chapek is on the national board of Make-A-Wish, a charity he has been involved with for decades.

• Bob Chapek is quieter, more reserved and private than past Disney CEOs like Bob Iger and Michael Eisner. He is, admittedly, more of an organizational person than a creative one, but he has made it a point to have meetings with his creative teams at least once a week to develop strategy and hear ideas/complaints.

• The Disney of 2022 is unlike the company that Walt - who died in 1966 - created in 1923. That company was a smaller Hollywood studio that eventually had one theme park and a distribution arm for films and other media. Chapek’s Disney is a complex, interconnected multi-billion dollar global corporation with hundreds of divisions, involved in many industries and with almost 200,000 employees worldwide.

• As such, Chapek has created a blueprint with three pillars, based on Walt’s own philosophy of business, to lead Disney into its next 100 years. Those pillars for Disney are:

1) Storytelling Excellence

2) Innovation

3) Focus on Future Audiences

So far, Chapek and his executive staff have lived up to Walt’s vision – keeping Disney the number one name in family entertainment. They’ve grown Disney far beyond what Walt could have even hoped for and will continue to reach even greater heights as the years go on.

Disney’s Earnings Call a Big Hit, with Disney+ Subscribers Beating Expectations

 by Ray Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 9, 2022

Let’s see if I have this straight. When Disney+ subscriber gains fail to meet market expectations, Disney’s stock takes a hit. It follows that when Disney+ subscriptions beat market expectations, Disney’s stock rises. Got it.

The market liked what it heard on The Walt Disney Company’s earnings call on February 9. Indeed, the company hit the sweet spot on several key measures – and yes, very much including Disney+ subscriber gains.

For the first quarter ended January 1, 2022, diluted earnings per share, excluding certain items, came in at $1.06, up from $0.32 in the prior-year quarter.

Also, domestic parks and resorts earned record revenues and operating income. The Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division saw revenues up by 102 percent versus the same quarter last year.

And as for those streaming subscriptions, Disney+ added 11.8 subscribers in the first quarter – outdistancing market expectations. Indeed, it was a healthy gain compared to the previous quarter’s gain of 2 million. Compared to the previous-year quarter, Disney+ subscribers were up by 37 percent, from 94.9 million to 129.8 million.

ESPN+ subscribers experienced an increase of 76 percent, from 12.1 million to 21.3 million. And Hulu rose from 39.4 million subscribers to 45.3 million, a gain of 15 percent.

That tallies up to total subscriptions across Disney’s streaming portfolio registering 196.4 million, compared to 146.4 million.

In after-hours trading (about an hour-and-a-half after the market closed), Disney’s share price was up by 8 percent.

Looking ahead for the company, Bob Chapek, Disney CEO, declared, “This marks the final year of The Walt Disney Company’s first century, and performance like this coupled with our unmatched collection of assets and platforms, creative capabilities, and unique place in the culture give me great confidence we will continue to define entertainment for the next 100 years.”

Disney Cashes In With Oscar Nominations

 by Ray Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 8, 2022

Oscar nominations are a win-win for any movie studio. That is, it’s a win from the perspective of artistic recognition (if one considers the Oscars to provide this), and it’s a win commercially, as films with Academy Award nominations often experience some additional life at the box office, via Blu-Rays or digital purchases, and/or streaming eyes.

Disney got a lot of win-wins by racking up 23 Oscar nominations, as announced on Tuesday (February 8) morning.

Courtesy of The Walt Disney Company

The big winner for Disney in terms of nominations was Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. Among its seven nominations were nods for Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Ariana DeBose, and Best Directing for Spielberg. I certainly hope that these nods give West Side Story some added attention with audiences. This marvelous film deserved much more at the box office.

Nightmare Alley earned four nominations, including one for Best Picture.

Courtesy of The Walt Disney Company

In addition, Jessica Chastain earned a Best Lead Actress nomination for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

On the animation front, EncantoLuca and Raya and the Last Dragon all received nominations for Best Animated Feature Film. So, it wound up that Disney produced three of the five films nominated in this category.

Courtesy of The Walt Disney Company

As for Marvel superheroes, Sony’s (and Marvel’s) Spider-Man: No Way Home received a nomination for Best Visual Effects. As a Sony release, this is not counted among Disney’s 23 nominations. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also received a Best Visual Effects nomination, as did Free Guy. If one counts Spider-Man, Disney/Marvel claimed three of the five nominations for visual effects.

The Academy Awards will be televised on Disney’s ABC network on the night of March 27.

Maiden Voyage of Disney Wish Delayed Again

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

February 4, 2022

The cruise industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus, and Disney has taken its share of the hits. Yesterday, the company announced one more hurdle – the delay of the Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Disney Wish.

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Wish was originally scheduled to be delivered from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, at the end of 2021, but Covid-related delays at the shipyard postponed the highly anticipated delivery for an additional six months. The newest delay means that the Disney Wish will not be ready until July, forcing the cancellation of a dozen scheduled sailings on board the new ship.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, “The shipbuilder, which also constructed Disney’s last two ships Dream and Fantasy, is prepared to give Disney Wish its first taste of water next week, depending on weather conditions. The float out will see the 144,000 gross tons vessel move to the next phase toward completion, leaving the enclosed building dock.”

The Disney Wish is the fifth and largest vessel in the Disney Cruise Line, accommodating 4,000-passengers, and was scheduled to begin sailing from Florida’s Port Canaveral on June 9. The new maiden voyage is set for July 14, 2022.

Among its new features, the Disney Wish will have the world’s first Frozen-themed theatrical dining experience; the “Avengers: Quantum Encounter” superhero tech mission during other meals; the Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge; the “Aqua Mouse,” 760 feet of twisting water tubes in an onboard water attraction; and a Broadway-caliber adaptation of The Little Mermaid, a theatrical performance created exclusively for the Disney Wish.

Guests with cancelled sailings can contact Disney Cruise Line to reschedule, and passengers booked on the June 9 inaugural voyage will be automatically shifted to the July inaugural sailing at a 50 percent discount. They can also opt for a full refund, or a 50 percent discount on a future cruise (departing by December 31, 2023). Guests on other cancelled sailings can also select a 50 percent discount on a future cruise (departing by December 31, 2023).

Disney Wish sailings for additional guests will be available for booking after February 8, 2022.

For more information, visit DisneyCruise.com or contact your booking agent.
