“I’m Going to Disney World” Super Bowl Ad Marks Anniversary

 by Chris Lucas

On this day, in 1987, the very first “I’m going to Disney World!” ad was created.

This iconic advertising campaign is officially called "What's Next?" It was first launched right after Super Bowl XXI, which was played between the New York Giants and Denver Broncos at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on January 25, 1987. The Giants won the game 39-20.

Giants quarterback Phil Simms, the game’s MVP, was asked as he was running off the field following the victory: “Hey, Phil Simms, you just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?”

His answer, “I'm gonna go to Disney World!” was said with a big grin.

It seemed like an impromptu response. In reality, the line was scripted for Simms. He was paid $75,000 for it. John Elway, the quarterback of the Broncos, was given the line and the money, too, just in case.

The ad, which featured a montage of Phil Simms’ heroics in the game, underscored by “When You Wish Upon a Star” and finishing with fireworks over Cinderella Castle, began airing just a few hours after the Super Bowl.

It was a smash hit. Almost instantly the line “I'm going to Disney World!” became a national catchphrase. It was an indelible part of the pop culture landscape, soon parodied on TV shows and movies and imitated in other advertisements.

Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner gives credit to his wife, Jane, for the idea. She claims to have come up with it after overhearing a friend who had just completed a difficult task reply, “I'm going to Disneyland!” when asked what they were going to do next.

In addition to Super Bowl winners, Disney produced “What's Next?” commercials with champions from other sports, as well as with Santa Claus, college graduates at commencement, and American Idol winners.

Disney ran the spots for 17 consecutive Super Bowls until 2005, when they decided to focus their marketing campaign in other directions. The public outcry after the cancellation convinced Disney to return to the spots.

They did a pre-game commercial in 2006 with members of both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks, who played in Super Bowl XL, practicing how they would say the line if they won. (The real honor eventually went to the Steelers' Hines Ward and Jerome Bettis.)

The ads stick mostly to football now, and often feature more than one athlete (they also have them say two lines, “I'm going to Disney World” and “I'm going to Disneyland” for commercials specific to both coasts), but they almost never fail to bring the same lump in the throat they did when first aired, over three decades ago. It’s a tradition that people - even non-football fans - look forward to every year.

NFL Doesn’t Score a Disney Parks’ Parade This Year

Disney Parks Blog has popped the air out of NFL fans’ footballs – there will not be a Super Bowl LV parade at Disney this year. It’s a pity, too, because the Chiefs and Buccaneers would be just a short car ride away in Tampa, Florida, for this year’s gridiron contest.

In previous years, the MVP and his victorious teammates were invited to Disney’s Parks to be celebrated with a parade down Main Street U.S.A.  This year, though, COVID has put a damper on the festivities, as “parades” aren’t happening in Disney right now as a way to keep people socially distant.

No worries, though. The iconic commercial featuring the Super Bowl’s star player chanting, “I’m Going to Disney World!” will continue.  The tradition started back in 1987 with New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms (who actually proclaimed, “I’m Going to Disneyland!” since the Super Bowl was in Pasadena, California, that year).

The idea for the commercial originated with Disney CEO Michael Eisner’s wife, Jane, and you can see the whole story, “The Super Bowl, Michael Eisner’s Wife, and the Winner’s Parade at Disney World,” in last year’s DisneyBizJournal’s Super Bowl news.

Expect to see the “I’m Going to Disney World!” commercial right after the game. (You can also “catch” it on Disney’s social media sites.)

The Super Bowl, Michael Eisner’s Wife, and the Winner’s Parade at Disney World

Super Bowl LIV kicks off tonight at 6:30 PM EST, with the Kansas City Chiefs squaring off against the San Francisco 49ers in Miami. After the game, someone on the winning team will look into a camera and declare, “I’m going to Disney World!”

On Monday, February 3, that star player will be part of a celebratory parade down Main Street, U.S.A., in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Even if not at the park, you’ll be able to watch as Disney will stream the parade live on the Disney Parks Blog at approximately 2:40 PM EST.

The “I’m going to Disneyland” or “I’m going to Disney World” Super Bowl moment began with Giants quarterback Phil Simms at the Super Bowl in Pasadena in early 1987. In his book, Work in Progress, Michael Eisner, Disney CEO at the time, described how it all got started:

No campaign we undertook achieved more visibility than our “What’s Next?” ads. Early in 1987, Frank [Wells] and I had a dinner inside Disneyland with George Lucas and several celebrities we’d invited to promote the opening of Star Tours, among them Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan. The couple had made headlines a month earlier by piloting a single-engine plane around the world on one tank of gas. At some point in the evening, my wife turned to Rutan. “Now that you’ve flown around the world and done the most adventurous thing imaginable,” Jane asked reasonably enough, “what are you going to do next?”
“Well, we’re going to Disneyland,” he replied sincerely. As soon as she had a chance, Jane pulled me aside and described the exchange. “This would make a great advertising campaign,” she said. By the middle of the night I was addicted to the idea. The next morning, I called Tom Elrod. Two weeks later, at the Super Bowl in Pasadena, the New York Giants overwhelmed the Denver Broncos. As the Giants’ quarterback walked to the sidelines, he stopped for the camera crew we had waiting. “Phil Simms, you’ve just won the Super Bowl,” an off-camera voice asks. “What are you going to do next?” He looked at the camera with a big smile and replied, “I’m going to Disneyland.” We had arranged for Simms to spend the next day at the park with his wife and young children, appearing in our parades, taking his kids on rides, and making a slew of media appearances—each using Disneyland as a backdrop.
To our amazement, the campaign acquired a certain icon status.

And it remains iconic 33 years later.
