Sometimes life gets a little too interesting, if you know what I mean, and you just need to take a break. A little entertainment – even escapism – is in order. Of course, Disney kind of specializes in supplying escapism from what might be called "everydayness."
And with Disney+, a steady stream of such escapism arrives in our living rooms, via the computer, and on our phones. So, I decided to take a peek at what’s coming to Disney+ that I’m likely to carve out some time to watch through the end of next month. What’s on my Disney+ Summer Watch List? Well, three items particularly stand out in terms of premieres.
First, since I’ve been on the road, I have yet to watch "Hamilton," which premiered on Disney+ on July 3. Shame on me. But that Broadway event tops my watch list.
Second, "Muppets Now" premieres on July 31. Disney had me at the word "Muppets." But for those who need more to consider tuning in, here’s a summary from Disney:
"Muppets Now" is The Muppets Studio’s first unscripted series and first original series for Disney+. In the six-episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him.
Overflowing with spontaneous lunacy, surprising guest stars and more frogs, pigs, bears (and whatevers) than legally allowed, the Muppets cut loose in “Muppets Now” with the kind of startling silliness and chaotic fun that made them famous. From zany experiments with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker to lifestyle tips from the fabulous Miss Piggy, each episode is packed with hilarious segments, hosted by the Muppets showcasing what the Muppets do best.
"Unscripted" Muppets? Yes! The first episode of "Muppets Now" arrives on Disney+ on Friday, July 31, with a new episode coming along each following Friday.
Third, like the Muppets, all you have to say is "Phineas and Ferb," and I’m in. If ever we needed a summer with Phineas, Ferb, Candace, Isabella, Perry, Dr. Doofenshmirtz, and the rest of the gang from the Danville tri-state area, this would be it. Thankfully, "Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe" arrives on Disney+ on August 28.
Disney says that "the movie centers on Phineas and Ferb as they set out across the galaxy to rescue Candace, who after being abducted by aliens, finds utopia in a far-off planet, free of pesky little brothers."
There’s more, of course, to watch on Disney+ for some escapist fun and illumination, but even if it were just the Muppets, and Phineas and Ferb, that would be more than enough.
