Brunch at THE BOATHOUSE – Do Not Miss This

I came away with two overarching thoughts after having brunch at THE BOATHOUSE in Disney Springs this past Sunday.

First, the person – I assume a chef – who first decided to combine crab cakes, prosciutto ham, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce should be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But however it was done before, I cannot imagine that anyone has come close to the Crabcakes Benedict offered at THE BOATHOUSE.

One person in our party called it “an incredible mix of flavor.” Indeed, it was “rich” in the best sense of the word. And what made the difference in the end was the fact that the two crab cakes were dominated by large pieces of crab. Even some of the best crab cakes I’ve had – such as in the Maryland and DC areas – leave one wanting. In particular, it always seems to be more about “cake” than “crab.” When you discover a nice chunk of crab in those crab cakes, it’s a delight in part because it’s kind of rare. That is definitely not the case with the crab cakes at THE BOATHOUSE. The “cake,” if you will, is subservient to the crab, as it should be.

THE BOATHOUSE’s Crabcakes Benedict is nothing less than outstanding.

The rest of the meal excelled as well. The Parker House rolls started things off in delicious fashion, topped with a sweet icing.

And given that this was brunch, our party mixed things up a bit. Our two appetizers actually were at opposite ends of the spiciness spectrum, but we managed to appreciate each.

The Steamed Middleneck Clams were tender, and the mix of garlic butter, white wine and garlic crostini complemented, rather than overwhelmed, the clams.

As for the Firecracker Shrimp, being prepared in sriracha mayo, serrano chilies and sweet pepper meant a robust, spicy flavor, but not to the point of ridiculousness whereby the diner loses the enjoyment of what’s being presented and eaten. It’s a delicate balance whereby the flavor of the shrimp can come through with the spiciness, and that’s exactly what is accomplished with THE BOATHOUSE’s Firecracker Shrimp appetizer (or launch, as appetizers are referred to on the menu).

Also, the Boat Drink chosen from the brunch menu was a Pearmosa, and it worked well for a sunny, late-Sunday-morning brunch. It was bright and offered tiny bubbles.

So, what was my second overarching thought coming away from this particular brunch at THE BOATHOUSE?

Well, it had to do with the service. The wait staff were impeccable, helpful and attentive – as I have experienced before at THE BOATHOUSE. But they came by even more often than usual because things got a little backed up in the kitchen, and our meal was somewhat delayed. Each person was very apologetic. But the response by myself and the rest of my party was, in effect, “Please, don’t worry. We are completely enjoying ourselves.” And we were, not just because we had good company and conversation, but because it was a perfect late morning in Florida. We chose to sit outside on the deck, waterside with a perfect view of Amphicars sailing by and the Saratoga Springs Resort across the lake.

Excellent food. A great view. Good conversation. That falls into the I-hope-this-never-ends category of meals, thanks to THE BOATHOUSE.
