A Big Welcome for the Disney Skyliner

by Ray Keating

September 26, 2019

Even the biggest fans have something that bugs them about Walt Disney World. For me, it’s the buses that move people between the parks and Disney resorts. That’s why I’m looking forward to the official launch of the Disney Skyliner on September 29th.

In general, I’m not a bus person. In fact, it’s hard for me to think of a form of transportation that I dislike more than buses. Take that anti-bus predisposition and factor in being on vacation, perhaps after a long, hot day in a theme park, standing on a long line waiting for a bus to take me back to my hotel room, and my outlook on buses fails to improve.

Of course, I understand that the daunting task of moving around thousands of people in Walt Disney World – that is, in effect, running a city transportation system – isn’t easy, and at times, it will not be ideal. While I’d like every move between a park and hotel to be as enjoyable as the Disney FriendShip boats taking people, for example, from Epcot to Disney’s Yacht Club and Beach Club Resorts, the Boardwalk area, the Dolphin Hotel and Hollywood Studios, I get the need for buses.

My hope is that I’ll be able to take to the skies more often aboard the Disney Skyliner, and thereby avoid the dreaded buses. The Skyliner holds great promise. Consider the following that Disney is telling us about this new addition to their transportation system:

• The Skyliner will connect “Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with four resort hotels – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and the new Disney’s Riviera Resort, a Disney Vacation Club resort that will open Dec. 16, 2019.”

• “Many of the nearly 300 cabins will feature graphics based on Disney films, attractions and characters – giving the sensation that Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Pluto and Goofy, Chip ’n Dale, the Pirates of the Caribbean and many others have joined the fun.”

• “Each Disney Skyliner cabin can accommodate up to 10 guests, including those traveling with wheelchairs or assistive devices. With the system in constant motion, guests will arrive at their destination in minutes; and they’ll arrive relaxed – in the comfort of cabins mindfully tailored for the Florida climate.”

Following are a few photos taken of the Skyliner from earlier this month...

I love the idea of traveling around Walt Disney World by sea or, now, air. Anything to avoid those buses.

Disney Skyliner Becoming Part of the Walt Disney World Experience

by Ray Keating

Disney announced today that its new Walt Disney World transportation system – the Disney Skyliner – will open on September 29th.

The Skyliner gondolas will fly guests from Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot to four resorts – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and the new Disney’s Riviera Resorts, which is scheduled to open its doors December 2019.

The Skyliner looks like it will become an essential WDW experience in itself, with wonderful views on what presumably will be a relaxing journey. Plus, there will the fun of the cabins featuring graphics of Disney characters, movies and attractions.

Full credit to Disney, in a sense, in turning lemons into lemonade. That is, moving guests around the sprawling Walt Disney World complex and its various hotels ranks as a massive logistical and cost challenge. But true to form, Disney takes this seemingly mundane experience and transforms it into part of the Walt Disney World experience. No doubt, there will be guests staying at other hotels longing for a gondola flight.

In many ways, this is what Disney does so well, and other businesses should take note. No matter what the industry, is there downtime – whether standing in lines or riding from Point A to Point B – that can be transformed from a drudgery for your customers into a positive experience? Taking cues or lessons from Disney makes sense.

Disney-Related Streaming Recommendations for Your Weekend

assembled by Beth Keating

Here are a couple Disney-related video streaming recommendations to check out over the weekend.

ResortTV1
You may have seen our recent post on the creative technology that ResortTV1 is bringing to the table in the live streaming arena.  They are developing new tech that allows them to seamlessly switch not only from park location to park location within Disney World, but from coast to coast, transferring live instantly from the World on Florida's east coast to the Land in California on the West Coast.  Now, ResortTV1 is bringing you another coast to coast adventure, and we can't wait to see it!  On Friday, May 31st, ResortTV1 will be live streaming the opening day of Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland, followed by a live stream on August 29th of the opening of Galaxy's Edge in Disney World.

On May 3rd, ResortTV1 also hit a milestone in becoming number one on live trending (they hit more than 2100 viewers watching live that evening).

Water Rescue Equipment
This week, Rob at "Passport to the Parks" speculated on the appearance of some new equipment at Disney World, providing great multi-day video of the custom pieces that are slated to be used for water rescue evacuations for the upcoming gondola systems over Hourglass Lake. (Water rescues for the new system have been an ongoing source of concern and speculation for future riders.)  If you've been following the gondola progress at all, you'll know that Rob has been ahead of the story with interesting, exclusive video on the gondolas since the very beginning.  We have a link to the newest video, but if you are interested in the gondola system (slated to open by Fall 2019), it is worth keeping an eye on Rob's videos.  He doesn't just provide unique video of the systems and their unveilings, but offers a few technical explanations of the operations along the way, in a very conversational and visitor-friendly format.  He's certainly become "the gondola guy!"
