Meanwhile, Disney and Pixar’s Luca will stream (at no extra cost) exclusively on Disney+ starting on Friday, June 18. Previously, it was set for a theatrical release on that date.

Other new release dates are Free Guy on August 13, 2021 (previously May 21); Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3, 2021 (previously July 9); The King’s Man on December 22, 2021 (previously August 20); Deep Water on January 14, 2022 (previously August 13); and Death on the Nile on February 11, 2022 (previously September 17).

Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, said, “Today’s announcement reflects our focus on providing consumer choice and serving the evolving preferences of audiences. By leveraging a flexible distribution strategy in a dynamic marketplace that is beginning to recover from the global pandemic, we will continue to employ the best options to deliver The Walt Disney Company’s unparalleled storytelling to fans and families around the world.”

Shanghai Disney To Celebrate Fifth Birthday With Special Giveaways

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 21, 2021

Disney World may be getting all the attention right now as it prepares for its big 50th Anniversary celebration, but Shanghai Disney is having a celebration of its own this year.  The Chinese park is turning 5, and will be celebrating the “Year of Magical Surprises!”

Remember Disney’s big “Year of a Million Dreams” promotion (which technically ended up lasting more than a year, from October 2006 to December 2008)?  Think in similar terms for the Shanghai festivities.  Beginning April 8, guests to the parks can win everything from digital character autographs, to dining rewards, to special VIP access for shows, to exclusive experiences.

Mickey, Minnie, Duffy the Bear and their friends will have special birthday outfits to show off, and many rarely seen characters will put in appearances.  A giant birthday cake float will lead Mickey’s Storybook Express pre-parade, while the parade itself gets a birthday overlay. Mickey Avenue will even be dressed in sparkling decorations for the party, and new soundtracks will debut.

When they enter the park, visitors will be able to "Tap for a Magical Surprise" on a link on the Shanghai Disney app. They will then be entered into a digital “lucky draw,” and they might find themselves gifted with something special.

Joe Schott, President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, said there will be “surprises waiting around every corner!”

Additional fun is in store with the "Surprise Squad" of cast members who will randomly select Shanghai guests to attend one of four daily performances of the Disney Surprise! Show on Tomorrowland’s Pepsi E-stage. Opportunities to win special birthday goodies await at the show, where attendees can spin the "Disney Surprise Wheel" for even more prizes, including “a 37-inch StellaLou Plush, a dining experience at the Royal Banquet Hall, hotel stays, park tickets, Annual Passes and much more.”

The grand prize at the Disney Surprise! Show, though, is that one lucky park guest will be selected as "Magical Star of the Day," and with three of their friends or family members, they will be presented with a “Golden Key” that will grant access to Mickey’s Magical Star Lounge in the park's exclusive Club 33 for VIP treatment.

Shanghai Disney will wrap up their daily celebrations by entertaining party-goers with “Illuminate! A Nighttime Celebration,” which will play on the Enchanted Storybook Castle, the world’s largest and tallest Disney castle.

Shanghai will also offer more than 200 limited edition “5th Birthday” themed merchandise,  and new snacks and anniversary menu items will be featured, including beverages in surprise sippers and souvenir popcorn buckets.

Interested in attending the big birthday celebration?  More information can be found on the Shanghai Disneyland website.

Disney Expands Its Relationship with the NFL

by Ray Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 18, 2021 (Updated at 5:58 PM ET)

In a new deal, Disney has expanded its relationship with the NFL.

The NFL, as announced on March 18, has signed agreements with Disney (including ESPN, ABC and ESPN+), Fox, CBS, NBC, Amazon and NFL Network that cover national television coverage through the 2033 season. According to The New York Times, the complete package is worth about $110 billion.

ABC will pick up two Super Bowls. The NFL reported the Super Bowl breakdowns as follows: “From 2023 through 2033, three Super Bowls each will be hosted by CBS (2023, 2027, 2031), FOX (2024, 2028, 2032) and NBC (2025, 2029, 2033), while ABC (2026, 2030) will carry two.”

According to an ESPN report, ESPN keeps Monday Night Football, while adding six games each season, featuring three Monday night doubleheaders (with a game on ESPN followed by a game on ABC), a late-season Saturday doubleheader, and a Sunday morning game on ESPN+. Also, Monday Night Football will gain a “flex” option starting in week 12 of the season to ensure better games. And ESPN will continue to air the NFL draft.

Amazon pulled off a major gain by getting exclusive coverage of Thursday Night Football (with local broadcast coverage of teams playing) on Amazon Prime Video.

The NFL noted that the deals allow for the league to add a 17th game to its season, and a decision on that will be likely be made at the NFL owners’ meeting on March 30-31.

CBS and FOX keep Sunday afternoon coverage, and NBC Sunday Night Football.

Each network is able to simulcast games on their respective streaming services.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek was quoted: “This landmark agreement guarantees that ESPN's passionate fan base will continue to have access to the best the NFL has to offer. Bringing all the considerable and unique capabilities of The Walt Disney Company and ESPN to the table opens up so many opportunities across our industry-leading direct-to-consumer, broadcast, cable, linear, social and digital outlets. Special thanks to Roger Goodell and the NFL owners for continuing to embrace new ways to appeal to their fans, especially through increasingly important platforms like ESPN+.”

The current NFL television deals expire after the 2021 season for ESPN, and after the 2022 season for CBS, NBC and FOX.

The NFL’s deal with DirecTV for the Sunday Ticket package also ends after 2022, but nothing new has been announced on that front. On the heels of today’s announcement, there are conflicting reports or rumors flying about Sunday Ticket, with some saying it will stay at DirecTV and others pointing to it going to ESPN+. Again, nothing has been announced on that as yet.

“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and "Heroes and Villains"

With the arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, what’s the ideal read to join these tales of superheroes? Consider Ray Keating’s Heroes and Villains: A Pastor Stephen Grant Short Story.

Stephen Grant, onetime Navy SEAL, former CIA operative and current Lutheran pastor, finds himself in an entirely unfamiliar setting – a comic book, science fiction and fantasy convention. But he still joins forces with a unique set of heroes in an attempt to foil a villainous plot against one of the all-time great comic book writers and artists. Reviewers love the adventure...

“An entertaining, immersive jaunt with a formidable protagonist.”  - Kirkus Reviews

“Keating's creativity and storytelling ability remain on point, for a fun and different take on Pastor Grant, and one that's just as satisfying as longer books in the series.”  - Self-Publishing Review

Heroes and Villains … is an enjoyable romp complete with the gritty realism of the Burton Batman films, the camp of the Adam West adventures of the 60's, and the modern humor of LEGO Batman. If you know the adventures of the Avengers from the movies or the pages, dream of the day of decent DC films, or love the experience of Comic-Con, Heroes and Villains is the read for you! … How I'd love to see Pastor Grant on Netflix!”  - Lutheran Book Review

“This is a fantastic novel... If you are a comic book fan who is fed up with the political correctness that's going on, you have got to pick up Heroes and Villains... I highly recommend this book... I'm definitely going to be paying more attention to Ray Keating, and getting more of his novels.”  - Jacob Airey, host of StudioJake

Disneyland California Announces Reopening Date!

 by Beth Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 18, 2021

After the 50th anniversary celebration for Disney World in Florida, the second most anticipated date in the Disney universe might well be the opening day for Disney’s California theme parks – and now we have it!

After more than a year of closure, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park will flip the “on” switch for their rides and attractions on April 30.  (Downtown Disney District is already open, and the sold-out “A Touch of Disney” at California Adventure will be underway, March 18-April 19.)

In addition, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa will begin welcoming guests on April 29, 2021, and the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel will reopen at a later date. Disney Vacation Club Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa plans to reopen May 2.

In order to comply with California’s governmental requirements on theme park attendance rates, Disneyland will implement a new theme park reservation system that will require all guests to obtain an advance reservation for park entry. Like its East Coast park, where a similar system has been in place since Disney World’s summer reopening, guests will need both a park reservation and valid admission ticket for the same park on the same date in order to enter a park.

Currently, under state guidelines, only California residents will be able to visit the parks. Disney will release specific information on the reservation system shortly.

Theme park capacity will be limited. Magic Morning and Extra Magic Hour offerings and FASTPASS and Disney MaxPass services will be temporarily suspended at this time, in order to comply with governmental requirements and manage capacity.

Disney also advises, “Select attractions and certain experiences that draw large group gatherings—such as parades and nighttime spectaculars—will return at a later date. While character meet-and-greets will be temporarily unavailable, Characters will be in our parks in new ways to entertain and delight our Guests.” New rides and entertainment options, such as “Snow White’s Enchanted Wish,” will also debut.

“Given this unprecedented situation, we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we navigate through this process as responsibly as we can. Additional measures and procedures will be announced closer to the opening date,” according to the Disneyland website.

Masks, temperature screenings, and social distancing measures will also be enforced. Check in with the Disneyland website for changes and updates.

Walt Disney and the Irish Claddagh Ring

 by Chris Lucas

Guest Column

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 17, 2021

The traditional Irish Claddagh ring - a heart topped by a crown and held by two hands - symbolizes love, loyalty and friendship, three appealing qualities that make the world a wonderful place when they are practiced.

Walt Disney was a man who showed all three.

He was filled with love - for his family, his calling, and for life itself. He was also extremely loyal, and extended the hand of friendship to everyone in the world, through his works and his park(s).

Walt was proud of his family's Irish heritage and only wore two items of jewelry in public: his wedding ring and his Claddagh ring, bought for him by his wife, Lillian, at a shop in Connemara, Ireland in the 1940s.

Walt Disney’s family was from County Kilkenny, Ireland. His grandfather, Kepple Disney, one of 16 (!) children, immigrated to Canada in 1834. His son, Elias (Walt’s Dad), crossed the border to the U.S. in the late 1800s and moved to the Midwest. Walt was born in Chicago in 1901.

The famous "Partners" statue at the Disney parks, designed by Disney Legend Blaine Gibson, depicts the Irish Claddagh ring on Walt’s right hand (the one not holding Mickey, the one pointing to the future), but most people never notice it because it is above the sight line.

A happily married man, Walt wore his ring the “wrong” way - according to some Claddagh purists - with the heart pointing out, meaning that his heart was available. It amused Lillian, but she knew that he meant no slight to her. He just liked the way his Claddagh ring looked with the heart pointed out. The Partners statue reflects that, as does the wax figure of him at Madame Tussaud’s in Orlando.

Love.

Loyalty.

Friendship.

Three qualities we often don’t pay heed to, but are deeply felt when we are the recipient of them. We should remember those moments and let them spur us into extending one or all of the three qualities to others, especially people who we might not know as well.

Like Walt, you’ll discover that showing even a little bit of love, loyalty, and friendship can open doors for you and propel you to great heights.

Have a great Saint Patrick’s Day!

“tá súil agam nach gcaillfimid radharc ar rud amháin riamh - gur thosaigh luch ar fad.” - Walt Disney (translated to Irish Gaelic.)

Disney Studios in World War II: Special Exhibit

 by Ray Keating

News

DisneyBizJournal.com

March 15, 2021

If you’re going to be in the San Francisco area this spring, then it’s likely worth a stop at the Walt Disney Family Museum to check out a special exhibit “The Walt Disney Studios and World War II.”

The exhibit opens on March 19 (with a special members-only preview on March 18), and will run through the spring. It will be held in the Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall, with the general museum hoping to open in April. The exhibit and Museum Store will be open on Thursdays through Sundays.

Regarding “The Walt Disney Studios and World War II,” according to the museum, this will be an immersive “retrospective of The Walt Disney Studios’ extensive contributions to the Allies’ World War II effort” curated by World War II historian Kent Ramsey.

It is further explained on the museum’s site:

When Walt Disney received word that the Disney studio lot in Burbank had been requisitioned as an Army anti-aircraft base after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, he and his staff pledged to support the war effort without hesitation—and without profit. This original exhibition illustrates how the The Walt Disney Studios devoted over 90% of its wartime output to producing training, propaganda, entertainment, and public-service films, publicity and print campaigns, and over 1,200 insignia, while also deploying a group of talented artists, including Walt Disney himself, to Latin America on a Goodwill Tour…

During this unique period in animation history, The Walt Disney Studios functioned as a morale-builder for both the civilian public and deployed Allied troops. Walt knew that cartoons would be an ideal medium for communicating with the American people—in an uncomplicated and amusing manner—about war-related issues and anxieties. In addition to the short films and military insignia produced, Disney characters appeared in a variety of home-front initiatives, from advertisements, magazines, and stamp books, to government posters promoting tax payment, food recycling, rationing, war bond sales, and farm production. The exhibition includes 550 examples of these rare historical objects and film clips.

Kirsten Komoroske, executive director of The Walt Disney Family Museum, stated, “This rarely-shared period in the Studios’ history offers insight into the creativity, innovation, and positivity that Walt and his team brought to the military leaders, troops, and civilians at home and abroad.”

In addition, Mike Gabriel designed a new insignia for the exhibition, which features “Donald Duck dressed as a pilot holding onto the wings of a Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boat while soaring over the Golden Gate Bridge. This boat was commonly seen in the San Francisco Bay during World War II.”

As for admissions, the museum reported, “To accommodate our guests safely and to ensure proper distancing, we require all guests—including members—to reserve tickets prior to their visit. Admission will be available on a timed-ticket basis with limited capacities set for each time slot. Visit our Tickets page to purchase or reserve tickets.”
