It’s kind of odd that another Disney
superhero movie just crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, but the
achievement hasn’t garnered much attention. No, this isn’t about Marvel. In
fact, until Disney does the Fantastic Four right, this is about the first
superhero family of the cinema – The Incredibles.
It turns out that in recent days, Incredibles 2 broke through $1 billion at
the box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. That truly is incredible, with Incredibles 2 now ranking number 9 in
terms of all-time domestic box office and 36th for the global take.
The first movie, The Incredibles
(2004), pulled in $633 million. When adjusted for inflation, again according to
BoxOfficeMojo.com, The Incredibles
ranks 168th all-time and Incredibles
2 coming in at 59 domestically.
And the movie clearly is worthy of
its box office achievements. Like the first film, Incredibles 2 ultimately is about a family with its problems, like
all others, but they love, support and protect one another, and in the end, they
work together. In this movie, that means as Helen, or Elastigirl (Holly
Hunter), goes off to save the world, and trying to make Supers legal once more,
Bob, also Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), takes on the work of caring for and
helping the children – Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner), and Jack-Jack
(Eli Fucile), whose powers are merging and creating chaos as a result.
Of course, there is a mystery to
unravel, an evil plot to foil, plenty of action, and a healthy dose of humor.
And no Incredibles movie would be complete without Lucius, or Frozone (Samuel
L. Jackson), fellow hero and Bob’s buddy, and Edna Mode (Brad Bird), fashion
designer to the superheroes, who steals every scene.
At the start of this second movie,
there’s a clip with the actors and director apologizing for taking 14 years to
make and release a sequel. Moviegoers didn’t mind the wait, given ticket sales,
and they’ve been treated to a top-notch animated film.
But what about an Incredibles 3? Well, director/writer
Brad Bird hasn’t ruled it out. But one gets the feeling that if it does happen,
fans will have another wait – but hopefully not another 14 years.
