The Southwestern-themed Coronado
Springs Resort at Walt Disney World is undergoing a major refurbishment and
expansion. I got a firsthand look during a stay last month.
First, it is well worth noting that
the extensive work being done did not impair our stay at the resort. That is,
no noise or service issues diminished the enjoyment of staying at Coronado. Credit
to Disney and the various staff, or cast members.
Second, the upgraded room was quite pleasant,
including comfortable beds, modern décor, a huge flat-screen television on the
wall, and a nicely upgraded shower.
Third, at the same time, the construction
work that’s being done obviously is quite public, and it’s not like Disney’s
going to be able to hide it away until done. The place is magical, but not that
magical. But other than certain views, there are no real losses for guests – as
long as one understands the situation.
Fourth, taking in the current
construction shows quite clearly the tremendous improvements that are on their
way, and scheduled to be completed in 2019. These include the 15-story hotel
tower (with an additional 500 rooms, and rooftop dining with panoramic views of
Disney World), a refurbished Dig Site (the main pool and accompanying arcade,
cantina, etc.), and an over-the-water bar and grill in Lago Dorado (I look
forward to having a nice beverage there).
Coronado already makes for an ideal business
and convention gathering place in Walt Disney World, and the forthcoming
upgrades will only improve on that. But make no mistake, it makes for an
enjoyable stay for couples and families as well. The investment that Disney is
making in Coronado Springs points to the ongoing improvements that need to
happen in a place like Disney World, as Walt Disney understood, with guests,
cast members and investors benefiting accordingly.
